The block heater works amazing. When it is plugged in tractor starts up almost immediately. Normally the tractor wants me to use the glow plugs for 5 to 7 seconds. Even when I park it in a heated garage that is roughly 50°F., I still have to use the glow plugs. does anyone know why it behaves this way.?

Because it's an old engine, perfectly normal.
The block heater is warming the inside of the engine up way above 50F, hence why it starts easier with the block heater over just a warm garage.

AS Wolfman said - very normal, I have 3 - 30+ year old machines, in 95 degree weather - I STILL glow the plugs (rather I have to) for 5+ seconds.

I believe these are IDI (Indirect injection) engines and they are typically hard starting. Block heaters make the engine turnover faster and the warmer cylinder walls help the combustion process to start quicker than a cold cylinder wall.

As state above, these earlier B series are extremely warm blooded when it comes to stating. I converted both of my B7200's glowplugs from the ignigtion switch to to a toggle switch. I let them warm up for about 40 seconds. That seems to minimize the smoke haze in the shop lol.
