picked up a needed item that is powered off 220/440 motor. according to plate on the motor...... does that mean it is a dual phase motor?

if it is just ... works for either... but slower on 220.... can I use 220v that is normally used for a kitchen oven? Got spare 220v from where oven/stove pulled out.

Speed (armature revolutions will be the same 22o or 440.

220-440 motors run on either voltage (with an internal lead change). If it's a 3 phase motor it will not run on 220-1, has to be 220-3 which is industrial power or you need a phase converter. Either a static converter which is a bank of capacitors or a rotary which is a single phase front end with the T3 windings to excite the T3 leg of the driven motor. Most 3 phase motors are what is called Wye wound. That is, once the armature is spinning, the self energize the 3rd phase windings. How a static converter works. The capacitors 'jump start the T3 leg and allow the motor to spool up fast enough to self energize. The problem with static conversion is the fact that you loose efficiency with the motor self excites.

It is a dual voltage motor, and like Tughill Tom says, probably 3-phase. Two phase is a really old technology and required 4 conductors. Three phase requires 3 conductors (and sometimes a neutral). You won't have 3 phase to a typical residence (it's more of an industrial thing), but some farms may have it available. However, you can get a rotary converter to turn single phase into 3 phase. Single phase motors require 2 conductors (plus the ground, of course).

A dual voltage motor must be configured for the voltage supply. If the motor is configured for the lower voltage, but supplied with the higher voltage, it will burn out quick. If it is configured for the higher voltage but supplied with the lower voltage, it will burn out slower. Re-configuring generally involves swapping some of the internal leads around and will be documented by a diagram somewhere in or near the wiring cover plate.

Hopefully the tag says how many HP it is ! If 10HP or less, you may be able to mount a 220V single phase motor to the 'needed item'.

looks like it is just less than 1.5hp (1kw = 1.34102hp)

it is nothing fancy. Just a shredder

Well that explains it.... It German. They run some odd voltage on that side of the pond.
It's most likely 220 V single Phase

big question , is how many wires are there AND are they LABELED !
4 wires, it should be single phase ( 2 x 220 volt windings....)
6 or 8, 3 phase, again 2 sets of windings.

when you say 4 and 8 wire ....... where would I be looking for these wires to verify? inside the motor or the power panel on the unit or in the cord to the wall?

Here is plug

when folk mentioned swaping wires for 220 or 440v use.... again where would this be.... inside the motor or in it's power panel?

I'll get pics of panel soon.

Inside the motor. There's usually a cover plate and/or box covering the wiring connections. There may be a label on the motor, on the cover plate or inside the cover plate with instructions on how to configure the motor.

I would not put too much faith in the plug as a guide to the motor's current configuration. Yes, there are NEMA standards that are supposed to be followed to prevent a motor from being connected to the wrong power supply. Unfortunately too many people are ignorant of or choose to ignore the standards. Verify the configuration yourself.

welll guess these answers most of my questions.... lable in side box says three phase

okkkk... it wont let me upload pics now..... says security token missing... whatever that means. working on it... but it is three phase

NEVER,EVER ASSUME electrical wiring !!! It's a sure way to get tossed across the room(lucky) or killed (unlucky).

It's quite common up here for 'master electricians' to wire up 240 volt electric water heaters with NMD12-2 wire. Hmm black, white, ground.....white is NEUTRAL, therefore ZERO volts, right ?? WRONG, zap, pow, dead....

'pro' industrial electrician was famous for using whatever plugs/sockets in his 'kit' to get a problem solved. Would run 440 3 phase through regular 115/15 plugs !!

Just get a 'normal' motor for your project. It'll be cheaper and safer in the long run.

I have a 3 phase well pump, but don’t have 3 phase in my house. So there’s an expensive 1 phase to 3 phase inverter box with a bunch of electronics on my basement wall that drives the well pump.

Coach, you will looking for a diagram like what is on the right side of the image. Usually behind the plate that covers where the wiring enters the motor. Post that image if you can.

All's well that end's well, find the correct motor on-line and carry on!:D

last pics seem to show this can be rewired for 120v.. am I reading that right? though it may be of no real help..... looks like it would only be the activation coil at 120v. not sure how that would help me unless ran that from a seperate power cord.... while motor was on a 220v ?

looks to me something like below would be my best cost effective route?

Those are pics of a magnetic contactor, not the motor itself.

The contactor is like a starter solenoid. It controls the large current required by the motor with a small current through the switch. Changing the heater coils as indicated will not change the actual voltage the motor receives or requires. The heater coils merely limit the current that the motor can draw. If you halve the voltage of the motor, you double the current. Therefore the contactor requires higher current heater coils if run on the lower voltage. This does not remove the requirement to reconfigure the motor itself for the lower voltage.

But if that contactor is attached to the motor, it does confirm that the motor is 3-phase.
