I recently put new bearings and oil seal in the front hub of my M9540. The guy at Kubota dealer near me wouldn't tell me the torque specs to reinstall the hub to the axel.

Does anyone know how much to torque the 12 bolts that hold the planetary Hub to the main axel? Thank you
It's a 2009 M9540 with front wheel assist

Firstly, I dont have that tractor, I have an M4700DT (4WD) and cannot find a planetary hub in the WSM. Perhaps theres a terminology issue?

The M4700 WSM does address bevel gear case on the front axle and prescribes a torque of 122-144 ft lbs.

It might be helpful to know the size bolts. M12 perhaps??

Kubota uses what I term an 'inboard planetary' unlike say JD and Massey that use an outboard (as evidenced by the large hub that sticks through the center of the wheel) so it's not referred to as a 'planetary' but a bevel box, so I'd say George is pretty close on his prevailing torque value.

I'd ascertain the bolt diameter and look in your owners manual. It states the prevailing torque value for various fasteners.

Yes. Bevel gear case. I'm just used to the other girls la on the yard getting planetary fixes every once in a while.
The bolts I believe are a M12.
attached below are the front axle parts torque specs, bevel gear case figure and front wheel case cover figure from the WSM for the M9540 to make sure of torque spec you want. If you can view the website from Canada, the following is a link to the WSM BY CLICKING HERE.

There she be. Up and running! Thanks guys!

Looks good. Just like my pair, Mary Kay pink.....:)

I have to say, I dismounted the rears on my open Station last summer for some tire work and those cast centers are unbelievably heavy. Took 2 of us to wiggle them off and you'd better believe they stayed vertical the whole time. If they had fallen over they would have crushed us.

Think my next tool investment will be a mobile shop crane.

I think advertised weight per side is somewhere around 700 pounds not including the tire or the outer rim. Probably 1000 pounds per side assembled.

I just had my upper and lower bushings replaced and seals on the left side on the open station. Had vertical slop about 1/16" so I had them do it while it was in for a valve adjustment. Both bushings were grooved and the upper bearing needed replaced as well.

Farming is never cheap:eek:

I'm curious about the lack of help from the dealer - did you get your new bearings and seal from that dealer?

Not sure if it was lack of help from his dealer or if he preferred to do it himself. I would have done my own (it ain't rocket science) but I had mine at the dealer for the valve adjustment so I had them do mine. it was there, better them do it but I could have. In fact I did the right side earlier in the year myself.

My parts on both sides were Kubota OEM. I don't like to compromise on parts and they weren't that expensive anyway. Bushings, seals and bearings for each side were less than 100 bucks.... and a little 3 bond too...lol

The dealer said they wouldn't do it, that they didn't have time. So, I got the bearings and seals thru my local Napa dealer and did it myself.
I don't have a shop that I am able to use at the moment, so that's why I had asked Kubota dealer. I don't like doing stuff like this in the cold, blowing and snowing weather.

I paid $90 for the seal. Napa was the same price as Kubota.
$26 for the small bearing. Kubota wanted $65.
The bigger bearing I paid $66. Kubota wanted $90.
Now, it's running NTN bearing. I can get them anywhere. Will put up the NTN bearing numbers later. Hopefully it can help someone.

Please not that the GENERIC table listing torque values for various sized fasteners DOES NOT APPLY to every case. (Pardon the pun)

Specific applications have specific torque values regardless of the size fastener. (Compare that Generic table to the actual specification for this item.)

Thanks Flip for posting that however as it is useful for general purposes.

My parts were as follows:
Upper bearing: $23.07
Seal: $14.32
Bushing $14.97
Bushing $ 53.64

and labor and they did it plus a quart of juice too. No outside in the cold. In their shop, in fact, the tractor stayed in the shop for a month.

Parts are so damn pricey up here compared to south of the border.
I ended up doing it on the tailgate of the wife's truck. Lol
Waited until the snow stopped.

Shop rates are ridiculous. $140/hour for a 18 yet old kid to do it not even a licensed mechanic.
