There is an old saying, firewood warms you 3x!! Cutting, splitting, hauling. Moving firewood is probably the most underestimated work. You split it, haul that to a drying spot, haul smaller loads to the burn area, etc. Having a tractor definitely helps out, still alot of handling each piece multiple times.
I thought about this, looked around and came up with a easy, very low cost solution. I built firewood racks out of used pallets and scrap wood. Each rack holds a face cord, it takes me 10 minutes to build one, and my only real material cost is deck screws (I always have scrap lumber around)
The great this about this is I can take the rack to the wood/splitter, fill it there, move it to a drying spot, then when I'm ready to use it move it to that spot (Sugar shack, fire ring...) Of course it helps to have fork attachments!

Solbergdave what do you think that rack weighs full of green firewood? I like the idea a lot, just don't know how full I could lift it with my b2650 FEL. Capacity 534kg.

I have boxes I built like that, and with my B2920 I can handle around 1/6th of a core of semi dry hardwood. That’s an actual cord measurement, not a face cord which can be whatever you want it to mean.

This chart lists my dry tamarack as weighing 3330 lbs./128 cu.ft. cord. So I'll be loading 1/3 cords max per lift given 534kg = 1137 lbs. I guess best I mount the backhoe on back for a good counterweight!

As pallets are more like 40" not 48" wide, one of your racks full may be just about 1/3 cord.
I have some pallets to play with, definitely going to knock one together soon and I'll report back on the results.

So after I built the first one and started splitting some big chucks of wood, lifting them green, I was thinking....is the tractor going to lift this rack, the wood was heavy. So first one, at about 1/2 full plus I forked it up and lifted no problem, so I went for it. Not an issue. I have a MX5800 and the rack is 4x4 and I put 2 rows in it, one on each side, then fill the center with some random pieces that will fit. So pretty much a full face cord.
FYI I used to burn wood to heat the house, now any inside burning is wood pellets. But I do use alot for maple syrup, and then theres campfire wood.
Per the better half we make the most expensive syrup on earth, so trying my best.

I found that the best tool for handling and dealing with firewood/fire tending is a teenage son :D

Yeah, but unless you keep turning out new ones, that’s a short lived solution.

Too bad none of you live close. I'm going to take down 3 big ash trees and chop them up and probably roast them.

nice lookin slabs ! hope you can sell them. I filled a 20'seacan with live edge, spalted Maple, most 1.25-3" thick, after 7 years I burned it all.NOONE even offered to buy it....
Now I'm up to my ash in Ash logs ( imported 'borer' is killing every Ash tree here in Ontario ) Seems every species has an attacker.
One 'problem' with a chainsaw mill is the amount of wood being cut compared to a bandsaw mill. 5 or 6 cuts probably equals one lost board ?

Oh yeah
If I did this more often,
I could go into the sawdust business

LoL

I probably won’t sell them.

I’ll just use them for projects in the future.

Around here they put a ban on transporting firewood across state lines.

Too little too late

The damage is already done
