I have a used (1600 hours) d1105 engine I’m installing on a sawmill. I’m curious what is a “normal” volume of diesel fuel returning to the tank? After initial startups, I’ll would estimate 1 gallon in 5 to 10 minutes.

Thanks for the input.

I don't know the amount, but I remember having to run a boat engine straight from the can after the diesel filter got sludged up. From that, I would say that you are not far off in your estimate. I know it was a lot more than we were using to keep the engine running.

It varies per the engine RPM, at full run I would say your probably about right, and if your wondering, no nothing is wrong with it bypassing so much diesel, it's just the normal operations.

I have looked into the fuel tank while my 2301 was running and can tell you there is a much larger amount of fuel being recirculated {and filtered} than there is being used by the engine running.

I was always told that the fuel did two things, first to let the engine run with the correct fuel pressure and the second is to cool the pump.
