Picked up a freight damaged inexpensive steel 3’ x 4’ carry all at the local dealer and cut the rear carry all portion off leaving 4” of base frame and the 3 pt frame.

Picked up what I call sea water new/old steel at local demo yard. Looked like it had been in the salt chuck for a decade as the rust pits were over 3/32” deep. Cleaned everything up, folded an angle steel frame and bolted all together.

The steel component/expandable ballast consists of multi-layers:

1 - ½” x 3” x 46” bottom steel plate 21 lbs
2 - 3” x 3” x 23” solid bar steel 64 lbs. each
2 – 1 ½” x 2” x 46” solid bar steel 42 lbs. each
2 - 3” x 3” x 23” solid bar steel 64 lbs. each
2 – 1 ½” x 2” x 46” solid bar steel 42 lbs. each
2 - 3” x 3” x 23” solid bar steel 64 lbs. each
1 - ½” x 3” x 46” top steel plate 21 lbs

The total rear 3 pt ballast weights in at over 770 pounds reducible or expandable

3 pt hitch 48 lbs
New Quick Hitch 80
Modified Carry All 50
Steel bars/plates 594

This allows removable of the BH as it wings around out there at over 5’ to the rear and add or substrate very tight compact rear steel ballast. Over 380 lbs can be added to the frame assemble to take it out to over 1150 pounds of ballast.

Pictures: original carry all frame, bare steel and frame, thin as a rail, and ready to roll. Note, there still a little fix up work to do but serviceable now.

Not bad for a shade tree backyard handyman with a little bit of rusty steel.

That looks nice! I have a flywheel from an old John Deere 14T hay baler mounted on my 3 point.
