I've used it as a touch-up on an old Pump action I had. If the gun has any value I would take to a Gunsmith and get done correctly.

If you are intent on cold bluing, get some Oxpho Blue from Brownells and follow the instructions. Works great.

It’s been so long I’ve forgotten what I used, but Fro65’s suggestion rings a bell....
The gun I did was a beater that wasn’t worth much. The results weren’t great, but I was a kid and probably didn’t do a good job either....

I have used most of the stuff on the market at one or another, including the stuff from post #1. In fact I recently blued an entire rifle with it, with excellent results.
The only troubles I have had are that the metal isn't clean enough, and it must have the exact same finish all over. In other words, if part is buffed/polished with steel wool, part is scotch brighted, and part is emeryed, you will end up with three different levels of bluing.

Forgot to mention that I have had better luck with everything warm- not hot, but not cold either.

Came out ok for a beater.
Heat helped
But very hard to get even coverage.

Good enough for now.
