Hi all,
I recently purchased a B6000 4WD tractor and because of excessive wear, I had to replace the broken left front axle U-joint and also the U-joint on the pinion shaft. Thanks to East Coast Andy for sharing his experience of his axle repair. The pictures were especially helpful. I bought a new oil seal for the pinion shaft but I cant get the nut off. I thought about clamping the pinion shaft end gear in a vise between two pieces of wood and using my impact wrench to undo the nut, but if I break the shaft, its $755.00 to replace the pinion shaft AND ring gear. They must be replaced as a set.
Any advice on how to remove the nut safely would be appreciated.

I think your idea sounds like the best way to do it.
I would use soft wood like a 2x4 or 2x6. ;)

Thanks for your quick reply Wolfman. I’ll proceed with clamping the pinion shaft gear in a vise between two pieces of softwood since you think it will work OK. I appreciate your concurrence on this method since I was very hesitant to experiment on these very expensive parts. I am new at tractor maintenance so I have a whole lot to learn from you guys.
Gotta love this forum ... tons of great advice from the tractor gurus!:)

Hi Dave,
Thank you for the recommendation of the torque multiplier tool. I’ve never heard of these before. I can think of a number of occasions when it would have been very helpful.

I agree that holding the pinion between wooden blocks is a safe way to go. An impact may do it, but a long handle on a socket may work better. I doubt you could break the pinion shaft or teeth. Maybe use hardwood blocks - or a few thicknesses of lead flashing to protect surfaces. It can help to dig out paint seams first if any. Best luck Dick B

Hi Dick B,
That’s two forum members who seem to favor clamping the pinion gear in a vise. I’ll try that first to see if it works and remove any paint that may be on the threads. Might try a bit of heat from a propane torch to help by expanding the nut.
Thanks!

UPDATE: I was not able to take the pinion nut off but since the seal is not leaking, I just left the old one in place. I’ll replace it if/when it starts leaking.
Everything else on the left axle repair worked out fine.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my call for help. :)

Not sure if the B6000 is the same design, but when I did the B7100 front axle, I got the pinion shaft apart by machining a special socket. I found a socket that just cleared the shaft, and then cut slots in it. There is a hole in the shaft that is for a roll pin that holds one yoke of the u-joint. I put a hardened pin in the hole, slipped the socket over it, and used it to hold the shaft, then it was easy to remove the nut. Assembly was reversed. 1st pic is the socket. (middle one)
2nd pic is the B7100 pinion shaft exploded view.
Maybe this will help someone else down he road.

That’s a great idea! I have included your pinion nut removal tool procedure in my WSM. How hard is it to cut the grooves into the socket. Did you use a vertical milling machine? Would a carbide cutting wheel work?
Thanks for posting your idea.

Thanks! I used a carbide end mill in my vertical mill, but with care, a cutting wheel would work also.
