Hi all. I am looking to renovate my pasture; there's too much thatch and moss and now in the middle of winter it looks quite brown whereas my neighbour, who makes hay every year, has a pasture of lush green grass.

I was thinking of mowing it as low as possible and then running a chain harrow over it several times to break up the thatch, however I'm not sure what size harrow my tractor can pull. I have a B7000 which is 17 hp and a mechanical transmission. There's what appears to be a 4' x 8' harrow on Craigslist right now, but I think it may be a bit too much.

Anyone have experience with chain harrows on a similar size tractor to mine?

You can pull quite a large harrow with very little HP.
I can pull a 4 X 4 spike harrow with the teeth fully down with my 10HP simplicity garden tractor, and the same harrow with 400lbs on it with my B7100.;)

Yeah you'll be fine with a 4x8. Its not real heavy and you're not doing heavy duty ground engaging with it, more or less scratching the surface as you go.

Hehe, my neighbour, an old time farmer, opined that my Kubota would never be able to pull it and I'd be better off with a 3x6, but then proceeded to tell me his old 8 hp tractor could pull it as it weighed 2000 lbs.

I believe that a 4x8 is around 500 lbs so I don't see the problem. The one I have my eye on is double tine and I think those usually have an aggressive side and passive side.

If I can take my B6100 2wd and move around a 19ft boat on a trailer I see no reason why you can't drag a 4x8 harrow.
