Joint cover on BX1870

Broke off. Any issues if not replaced and what would be an easy fix other then disassemble. Thx!

Disassembly is relatively easy, in case you decide to do it. I know because I lost the u-joint at the other end and had to replace it (then found the original on top of the mower deck afterwards...)

The u-joints are held in place by a roll pin. Push the roll pin out and the u-Joint slips on the splined shafts and the drive shaft can be dropped down. Not that difficult to do.

I think it would be easier just to replace the cover with a new one, than it would be to mess around trying to figure out an "easy" fix.

I agree with Henro, just get a new cover, the damage that can be done to parts in there from getting to dirty could get rather expensive! ;)

I am no mechanic either, by a long shot.

The only issue you will have to overcome is how to push the roll pin out.

I used a C-clamp to push mine in, but did not have to remove one, since the issue was in my case the pin was missing.

I THINK if I were to push the pin out with what I have on hand, I would use something like a large nut on the exit side, and still use a C-Clamp to push the pin through the hole in the nut.

Some may say just use a punch and hammer to drive the roll pin out. It just bothers me to put shock loads on bearings by doing that. Perhaps a baseless concern in the case of a roll pin. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in...
