because... the IDIOT parents demand 'something' , the DOLT doctors cave in and give/sell the ABs ( which don't work...) so NOW there's a dhortage of ABs that COULD have been properly used..

we (Canada ) just imported a MILLION bottles of kiddie portioned drugs cause neither doctors, pharmacist or parents KNOW how to make 'kiddie sized' portions of medicines......

some days I think Mother Nature SHOULD win.......

I’m not a doctor or anything close so a real question…

Why would a high volume of flu (virus) patients result in a shortage of amoxicillin (antibiotic)?
My bet is all the cases of RSV. The other issue I think is that kids are back in daycare and school. So they are passing funk back and forth. My grandson just got into daycare about 6 months ago. Seems like he's been sick with something or other every other week.

No!
There are two distinctly different flu strains out there today. Any good doctor will do a swab test prior to prescribing. The kid has the strain that tamiflu helps shorten the duration. Tylenol, fluids, sleep and grand ma's soup does the rest.

I am about to sharpen my BIG kitchen knife to cut rutabaga into little squares.
Anybody else call rutabaga by the old country name turnips ?
Wife's recipe is several generations old .

Maybe you should read my response again. I used the word terrified. As in, Only go out once a week for shopping only, wear masks outdoors, avoiding family because they hadn’t had their shots, had been on an airplane, stopped going out to their own doctors appointments and ended up with permanent neurological damage. These guys sat around watching CNN all day.

The oldies were hit really hard with the non stop fear porn. Some like mine will never recover. I am far from immortal at 51 but what my folks are doing, is not living. Sure, they are alive though. Such a shame - stepfather was a very successful aircraft engineer and actually revolutionized some of Boeing’s production lines. Nowadays he smacks himself in the head with his arm about every 20 mins. People don’t make smart decisions when they are terrified.

See the difference now Henro?
Actually during the first year of the pandemic your parents were acting reasonably for elderly people. Today maintaining that same behavior seems excessive.

While it could be exactly as you describe I cant help but wonder if you have exaggerated the situation a bit. Doesn’t matter though. I get your point.

You want to get together as a family and the parents are concerned about the possibility of catching a virus. You see them as being terrified, and they probably see themselves as being reasonable in their approach.

Some of this is the result of reacting to a very real threat during the first year of the pandemic when no Covid vaccines were available. Doing then what your parents are doing now may have saved their lives. Or may have been a waste of time. Luck plays a part in what happens too.

I’ve noticed myself hesitating to stop wearing a mask everywhere but recently got past that. Rarely wear one now…

I certainly agree there needs to be a transition back to at least the new normal. We will be going to our daughter’s for thanksgiving dinner. The granddaughter will be past the point of worry. We have our flu shots. We are just operating as we would have before this Covid thing came up.

Hopefully your parents will gradually find a way to transition to the new normal, which I expect will be very much like things used to be when we got flu shots (or didn’t) and didn’t worry excessively.

I take it you never held a dead child. If not , I hope you never have to.

Ask any parent that held a miscarried fetus about mother nature winning.
Or an EMT doing their best when they know the child they hold is NOT viable but they need to give the parents all the hope they can.

I , like others, have done this and I will do what every it takes to provide the best for my kids and grand kids.
Your comment is insulting to those that have lost a child !

It doesn’t. I just was prescribed a ten-day treatment of amoxicillin from my dentist….and there’s no shortage at WalMart Rx of amoxicillin.

Good question. It's possible that it's not related to flu, but a shortage of materials to produce the meds.

The reports that I've seen are about children's antibiotics, not adult.

Sounds funny…. But it isn’t.

Phobophobia is a fear of being afraid. You might be scared of the physical symptoms that come with fear, or feel worried that you could develop a phobia. Many people with phobophobia already have other phobias or mental health disorders. If you think you may have a specific phobia, talk to your healthcare provider.Mar 15, 2022

Pay particular attention to the last sentence GeoHorn. In case you are projecting instead of trying to be funny.

If you are having trouble following along, I was specifically discussing my oldies feeling terrified of contracting Covid to the point that they have physically injured themselves. You seem to think it’s a joke (you GeoHorn).

Henro - he was pre-diabetic when Covid hit. No Dr appointments meant it went untreated and not supervised. He has neurological damage from sustained Hyperglycemia because he refused to go to the ER. For a week. We are lucky he is still alive. This wasn’t a rare occurrence, this happened to many households across the country. Neglected cancer treatments even.

Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all.

I heard it is Tamaflu (Oseltamivir) that was said to be in short supply. CVS says they have plenty. Different sources have different takes on the issue.
We had no problem getting prescription filled within hours of the flu swab.

My daughter works at a daycare, she normally has 14 in her class. She was down to 3 yesterday and they told her not to come in to work today because they have less than 10 kids scheduled to show up for the whole daycare (normally around 60).

Multiple out with COVID, some out with RSV, a couple positive with the flu, and several with bronchitis.

re: I take it you never held a dead child. If not , I hope you never have to.

I lost my 1 year older twin sisters when I was young ,both parents when I was 35, so I know death .

My point was that prescribing drugs that will do NO good at all ,is WRONG and has led to a shortage of 'children sized' meds NEEDED for others. Saw a segment on CBC last night that effectivley said to take adult pill, cut up into children sized portions... and the big thing was parents didn't know HOW to do that..

guess there's no 'common sense' anymore.

Any “compounding “ pharmacy knows how to reduce adult portions for children.

Your original post had more than one point. I did not disagree with the dossing issue.
It was the mother nature part that twisted my shorts.

Tamaflu does indeed help shorten the duration of the flu. Does not cure it but, if it gives the kid a few less days of suffering I am all for it.

We had a somewhat different but not entirely dissimilar COVID situation with my father who was in inpatient rehab at the height of the most restrictive part of the COVID response. He was stuck in the rehab facility due to a 10 month delay in a knee replacement due to COVID restrictions on surgery. About 3 months of that was due to what was eventually determined to be an erroneous COVID diagnosis. It wasn’t determined to be erroneous until after demand for medical records and review by his full team of doctors under threat of legal action. (I was his medical POA and I’m not a nice person if someone is messing with my father.) In the meantime, he was kept in solitary confinement and nearly lost his otherwise strong mind just from the months of solitary. He did get the knee replaced and returned to independent living at home for quite a while before passing away from issues totally unrelated to anything COVID.

Point being, the response to COVID likely did save lives, but it was not without cost to the health of many who were unable, due to restrictions, or unwilling, due to fear (founded or unfounded) to obtain adequate medical care. The collateral damage caused by the response, whether it was right or wrong, wasn’t solely economic.

I recall one of my elderly friends saying shortly into lockdown, “I’ll take precautions but I’ll live until I die.” (He’s still alive.) My first thought was, no kidding, we’ll all live until we die. Fortunately, before I said anything the actual meaning of what he said became clear. I’m thankful, but for the months of solitary confinement, my elderly father was able to live until he died. I certainly hope your mother and stepfather are able to return to some balance of reasoned caution rather than fear based paralysis so they can live until they die.

Happy Thanksgiving.
