When I went active duty right after high school, it was an insanely unpopular path to take. We were only a year or so removed from the fall of Saigon and years of Vietnam didn’t help the public’s perception of the military.
I got it. If things break badly, the results can be devastating for those who wear the uniform.
I did my tour of service and that helped me for the rest of my life. Except for Iran and the hostages, it was a relatively quiet four years, thank goodness. College was a tough adjustment but, I stuck it out and even earned a masters. Retired now, it all worked out nicely.

In 1977, it was said that the Airman’s Club at Sheppard Air Force base sold more beer in a single night than anywhere else in Texas except for the Houston Astrodome when it was open. The beer was cheap and the bands were great….every single night. Kind of glad that I was only there for about 5 months.

Frankly, a high school degree today doesn’t indicated a minimum level of intelligence. It’s despicable what our schools are turning out.
I met a couple guys in my basic training squadron whose future jobs in the USAF was going to be cooks and truck drivers. Many of them had to take remedial reading classes also.
I’ve also known a lot of extremely intelligent people who didn’t have a high school degree, several have done quite well in life. I suspect that based on a very small sample set, a decent percentage of the “Greatest Generation“ never graduated from high school and successfully served during WWII. I can think of three in my family who’s served w/o a degree. Why? Poor with a total of 14 siblings.
Yes, the world is more complicated today, no doubt, but if they want to serve and are qualified when so many aren’t, sign ‘em up.
RIP Toby Keith, He did a lot of USO tours and a ton of "support the troops" type stuff for many of us that served overseas.
