I was driving though the yard and hit a bump and the tractor died like i came off the seat. when i tried to restart the dash said PTO engaged depress clutch pedal. I checked the Electric PTO switch and it was in the off position same with the Mid PTO. Pushing in the clutch doesn't help either. I jumped the solenoid on the starter to get it to start and the PTO is not engaged. Also when you try and push the forward reverse pedal it tries to shut the tractor off. I'm assuming its a safety switch problem so i checked for continuity on the seat switch and clutch pedal switch both appear to be functioning correctly. The PTO is a 3 wire type and all the wiring diagrams that i can find only show two wires. I used and ohm meter to check it and it opens and closes across two of the wires.I have read in some other forums of people have a similar issue but there was no cause of the issue ever posted. If anyone can offer some guidance i would greatly appreciate it.

I actually figured it out this afternoon. On first look at the fuses they all appeared ok but when I was checking for voltage I got nothing and went back to the box with a test light and found a bad 5 amp fuse. Apparently when the safety switches loose voltage they act like they’re engaged. So good news simple fix

Thanks for reporting back on your findings.

As Mr. Wolfman asked, it would be nice to know which model L4240 -1 or -3.

-1 versions use a mechanical lever for engagement
-3 versions use a yellow rotary electrical switch to engage PTO
