Any recommendations on a 3-point mounted sickle bar mower, for my L3400? I've got a few places like the edge of my pond that I don't want to take my brush-hog right up to because I'm afraid of dropping a tire over the edge. Would also be good for along the inside face of the dam, and along the gravel road (I'm tired of getting slapped by branches!).

Looking for advice - what to look for, what to avoid. Any help would be appreciated.

Look for a ford 515. It will cut in many angles not just flat like the 501. I've seen them around my parts the last couple years in the $300-600ish range.

Don't remember the model number but IH made a really good sickle mower. Unlike most that are driven by a pitman arm the IH was belt driven to a gear box. Had one when I was a kid and it cut better than any one I had ever used.

I wasn't aware that there was such a thing as a "good" sickle bar mower. Some knife section is always loose or broken, or a hold-down is mis adjusted, or the index is out of adjustment or something like that. Was never so glad to see a piece of equipment go down the road as my New Idea sickle mower.

I see one every few days on Craigslist. Usually pull-behinds. Anything I buy used I assume will need rehab work, I don't assume these would be any different. $300-600.

Here is my Ford 515 behind my B7100. It works well for road sides, especially embankments, or trimming along water. A boom type flail mower would be better, but who can afford that. I caught this mower at a farm auction for $90. But like others have said, usually they run $300 to $600. It only has a 6 ft bar vs 7 or 9, but I only wanted a short bar. A longer bar would try to pull the front of a light tractor like the B7100 around.

Dad has a NH sickle bar mower in the implement shed. It is in good shape, but he hasn't used it in years. I never even considered trying it out on my 7100... might have to fiddle with that one rainy day...

I think NH is supposed to be one of the best from what I have read. The wobble box rather than the pit-man arm is what makes them so much more useful on banks (Ford 901 vs 915). They can basically cut at any angle. The NH may look very similar to the Ford since they own them now. I grew up with a Massey Ferguson mower that worked great.

Fiat and New Holland got together and now they also own Case and formed CNH Global. Case and New Holland are one in the same in the United States, Fiat in all the other areas of the world.

I was informed they are all the same, and you can throw a company called LS in there too. Identical tractor to the new hollad with different headlights. ( identical but different. - so I guess it's not identical )
