My manual for my B7100 HST says SAE 10w - 30. Can I assume it cannot be the oil for gasoline engines? I had a Qt of Kubota 10w-30, but wanted to just get oil locally if possible. Nearest Kubota Dealer is 30 miles away.. Any thoughts?

Run Shell Rotella or Chevron Delo.

Rotella is available at Walmart for ~ $13/gal and is highly, highly recommended.

Delo is usually available at your local auto parts.

Both are very good oils, half the price of Kubota, and are Diesel rated.

Good luck!

X2...... 15/40 diesel rated oils are best. You can get them in full synthetic. Amsoil makes a 5/40 full synthetic. That would be good for you in your climate summer and winter.

Thanks guys. I saw the Rotella 15/40 at our Walmart, and will put in Full Synthetic since I use the tractor to push snow in the winter.

Id, go with a 5-40 if you are using it during winter....especially if you have the tractor parked outside.

Motörhead, Thanks for the imput, I will go with 5/40 synthetic, even though I keep it parked inside.
Curious, why the book doesnt recommend those types of oil, unless those types weren't around in the 80's when my tractor was put into service?

You got it- oils have changed since your tractor was made.

Diesel rated oils have a letter rating starting with a "C". Gasoline engine rated oils start with an "S"
Example is the latest diesel rated oil is CJ rated. It is compatible for turbo charged diesel engines that also have after treatment on the exhaust such as DPF put on all diesel pickups and heavier duty diesel trucks built after Jan 1 2007

I think that Gasoline oils are SJ or SM.

Diesel grade oils usually have a better additive package that caters to the rod and main bearings due to the greater load they see over a gasoline engine.

Rotella is a great oil. My dad had a 1963 Porsche 356 that had run Rotella from the first start at the factory. When we rebuilt it at 100,000 miles, My dad mic'ed all the journals on the crank and could not see any measurable wear.
