Just acquired a deal too good to pass up. Got an L2850 4x4 shuttle shift 1700 hours with Kubota loader and fairly new tires that is in overall excellent shape except the engine has a bad knock and the front crank seal leaks like a sieve.

What put the deal over the top was it came with a John Deere 272 finish mower that was recently gone through new blades tires and is in about new condition overall as well, also a 5' TSC box blade well used, a 3pt cultivator and a very good condition 6' Tarter rotary brush mower all for $4500.

I plan on fixing the engine and using the tractor for a bit to see if I want to hang onto it or sell it but will be opening up the engine to see what let loose in it. I bought it as is did not try to start it so as to not cause anymore damage but did turn it over just enough to confirm is has a knock.

My question is where is the best spot to buy either engine parts or if it is bad enough a reasonably priced used or reman engine?

Have not been on here for quite a long time, my B2150 just purrs away issue free.:D Just hope it doesn't get jealous having a new big brother around.:p

I'm a Coleman buyer too, but for that engine rebuild, Go here:

http://www.kumarbrosusa.com/kubota/product_list.php?engine_no=V1702DI&filter=engine_number

Complete engine rebuild kit $751.06, includes most all the wear parts.

3 choices:
Standard size
Standard size with liners
.5 over pistons.

Note: That is a V1702-DI engine (Direct Injection), there is also a V1702-IDI (indirect injection), not all parts are interchangeable.
I'm in the middle of a V1702-IDI rebuild right now, they are fairly easy to do. I'm boring mine out to .5 over to avoid swapping scared liners.

Also Note: That if you do get the kit with liners they are semi finished liners and the will need to be pressed in and then bored (just did a D950), Not cheap or easy to do, machine shop costs were in the $700 range just to have that done, and if they deck the block (mill it) you will need to get the injection pump shim that is exactly what they mill off of it.

If I can help just give a shout! ;)

Thanks for the info guys, I will keep posted on what I find and the direction I head with the project. Going to be a spare time into winter project but may get started early one never knows, I will be pulling oil pan down this weekend and looking at what is broke to get me started in a decision direction.
I looked up the post on CL and he doesn't have any v1702 engines but his prices for the bigger ones just under that are pushing $2k which I would not pay for used. I would do my own rebuild for the same or less or just spend an extra thousand for a warranty reman engine.

Dropped the oil pan and found the crank shaft broke on the front edge of the #2 rod journal, the rod cap was the only thing holding it together, answers the question as to why the front crank seal hemorrhaging oil during only a few seconds of craning it over now too. Now to start pricing things out knowing what I am looking for.

Here is some eye candy of the carnage I know everyone wants to see.

I just bought the baby brother to this tractor, mine is the L2250. Mine also has a problem with the crankshaft, the crankshaft to flywheel bolts broke, and marred the flywheel.

Good luck with your project

Looking and searching the web seems I keep coming across info saying that the V1902 and V1903 and 2202 will work in place of the v1702 and have seen places that convert v1702 and 1902 engines to 2202.
Wolfman any thoughts on this?

Most are skid steer sites, seems these engines are used in this application more than Kubota tractors and are common retrofits from my searching but wondering if they would work in a tractor application if they are the same physical size. The bigger engines are easier to find and more reasonably priced from my searches thus far.

What is the difference between the 02 and 03 series engines?

It's a V2203 that you would want not a V2202.
Now the tricky part, there is several versions of both the V1702 and the V2203. Your V1702 should be a DI type so you would want to stick with that same type in your refit.

I'm not 100% sure of all the mounting points and bell housing bolts, the Bobcats and others use an adapter plate to connect them to the pumps.

I'll do some more research later and get back to you. ;)

I can compare the 2 tomorrow as my V1702 is completely tore down and easily measurable.
I do know the oil pan is a direct cross over. ;)

I might be scrapping my V1702 here shortly, If the head is bad (again)!
I'll let you know, all you would need to do is use your head and it's already bored out to .5mm over.

My V1702 IDI is a different crank than your V1702DI. :(
Besides that my head is not cracked so I'm rebuilding it now. :D

I'm having a tough time finding exact bolt and size specs on a V2203DI engine, there is more information on the IDI's, but even that info is very thin.
