I have been trying to figure this out. My kubota L3450 GST key switch quit working to start of stop the engine. I can jump the starter across and it starts just fine. I can not turn off the engine with the key, have pull emergency stop lever. When ever I turn on the key the relay for the shut off vibrates for a long time. So I replaced it. Did not make a difference the new one makes the same sound like a rattle shorting out noise. Then I replaced the starter relay no change. I also bypassed the neutral safety switch. Nothing seems to work. I have checked all the fuses, the battery is fairly new. Any one have this problem?

Jeff- -

No expert here, but I suspect your ignition switch itself is going bad.

Losing enough juice across the switch, it doesn't trip the relay - it just buzzes.

Check voltage into and out of the switch - maybe you'll find a drop.

Other possibility is battery, but I'd check switch first.

Again - just guessin'...there's others here much smarter than me with electrical stuff.

Best of luck!!

I assume you mean the key won't shut off the engine. Have you tried out the function of the pump shutoff solenoid? I assume your tractor will have one. Look for wire(s) near the injector pump, most solenoids of this type are round... :D:D

Thanks everyone for your input. I have replaced the key switch, the fuel shut off timer, the starter relay, the battery. Check the slow fuse at the starter its fine. The key switch will not do any thing. Will not start the engine or stop the engine. I have to jump the starter to run the tractor. Its like there is not ignition system at all. I have checked all the fuses and replaced them still nothing. The key switch has power to it and will turn the dash lights on but when I turn it to start the lights go out like a dead battery, which it isn't.

The solenoid works if it gets power. Its just no power goes to it from the timer which I replaced. When turning off the key the timer hums for a bit but does not work the solenoid

Your losing ground.
Remove and clean both ends of the ground cable.
Next if that doesn't fix it look under the left side panel right behind the steering wheel, it has a group of ground connections under it.

I'll send you a link to download the WSM for your tractor, It has a wiring schematic in it too.

I have the same issue with my L3450 and have done all the same checks as Big Jeff. My thoughts were on a ground wire, but don't know where the ignition and dash are grounded at.

Did you clean and tighten battery connections? An examination of the electric circuits in the manual may tell of some area not checked, such as seat switch.

As said in other electrical posts, a bad or intermittent ground is just as aggravating or more as a bad positive. The ground is often overlooked as a given. There has to be a cable/strap that carries the ground from the motor to the chassis as the motor is in rubber bushings/motor mounts. For trouble shooting I would run a temporary ground from the battery to the items you have tested/replaced when you were focused on the hot side to see if it has any effects. Even if you use a 12v test light from the neg. post and touch areas that are not grounded but should be it will light up. If it does it is a ground problem.

That's a great idea Greenhead! You and North Idaho Wolfman have given me another track to look at. Thank you. And thanks to Big Jeff for describing the same trouble I'm having.

Big Jeff,
I just solved the problem with my tractor, that might be the same for yours.
Behind the ignition panel on left hand side, there is a switch located toward the bottom of the shift lever. This switch can prevent starting if it has gone bad or is out of adjustment it has a springy lever actuates when tractor is in neutral. Fast way to test it is to remove the panel then (while in neutral) hold the lever in manually and try the key.

I do not know if Big Jeff is still having a problem, but his description of his situation, seems to point to a bad starter. The solenoid is kicking in, which closes the circuit, and power is getting to the starter windings, which is not turning the armature, drawing more power.

His dash lights work, so his issue is different from the others.

Just a thought.
