The pto should be at 540 rpm's and your ground speed is whatever is comfortable for you. No matter what the ground speed is the cutter is designed to be operated at 540.

Just do what works best for your conditions. I never run at full rpm.

Bottom number on tach in the bottom photo of your post is pto speed. Most implements were built to built to run a 540.

I figure 540 for really hard cutting, pretty much whatever you think is the worst the unit is designed for. For cutting grass and light brush, I run more like 2000rpm engine speed, where my 540 mark is about 2800 engine rpm. As long as it's cutting cleanly, the blade speed is fast enough for me. Just my opinion anyway.

Unless conditions require it I run my L3830 at about 2200 RPM, that makes the PTO speed less than 540 but it still does a good job mowing and the engine is not screaming unnecessarily

When I bush hog I run a 10ft. offset bush hog. I pull it with a M6800. In tall grass I run it around 2000 rpm in Low 3rd. In shorter grass I run it in low 4th around 1800-2000 rpm. Very seldom do I run the PTO at 540 rpm.

540 is max rpm, doesn't hurt a thing to run them below that. I've been doing it for 30 years.

No you don't have to run it at 540. I actually try to stay off of 540 if I can. I was able to mow some grass today in high 1st with the motor rpm running in the range of 2000-2200. At 2200 rpm I was running 530 on the PTO.
