My go to deer rifle is currently an AR15 I built in 6.8 SPC. Silver State Armory 110 gr soft points works as it should.

When hunting big mule deer I prefer to use my ( Sako ) 300 Win Mag with 180 grain Noslers , when hunting Blacktail bucks I use my ( Howa ) 25-06 with a 100 grains Barnes bullet .

6.5 X 55 Swede on a Mauser m96 action and a Hungarian Mosin Nagant m44 in a synthetic stock. Neither is pretty but they see way more field action for deer hunting than all of my other rifles put together.
When just hiking around I take the 45-70 but that isn't the go to deer rifle.

The 6.5 x 55 is an awesome cartridge.

Picked up a couple days ago, a whole different beast than the compound but a lot of fun and also the neighbours don't complain near as much. ;)

So when does the season open where you are? What are you hoping to get this year? (I need to live vicariously, I won't be able to hunt this year unless something walks on the property and I have a rifle handy, and I'll need tags too)

Wyoming in October. It opens the 15th; we're going the last week of the month. My tag is for any whitetail or a mule deer with at least 3 points on one side. Never hunted there before, so don't know what to expect. Back to Minnesota opens first weekend of November. Whitetails in slug zone there. Probably looking for a buck on my parents' property on the Dakota border and a slick or 2 from the metro area.

My goals are a 130"+ buck but really looking something closer to 140".

I'll shot my 4 does and my buddies will supply me with another 10 to 15. Our deer are small so when said and done on each doe I get about 20lb of meat. Some for steaks, roasts, and jerky the remainder burger and sausage.

Once processed which we do ourselves I will give back some to those who were generous.

Highlight will be next November when I return to Illinois for a week bow hunt for the big ole mid western whitetail. We go every 3rd year up there with Midwest Trophy Outfitters, a great group of guys that are serious about putting you on a big free range buck.

We are in bow season now and my choice is a Hoyt Carbon Spyder.

Be October before I pick up the 270 or 300 wsm.

Skeets, sounds good!

Just for fun and bragging rights bout 20 of us chip $20.00 into a pot for a biggest doe contest. Winner last year was a 14 yr old who weighed in a 126 pounder.

No one else above 115# with typical coming in around 100# to 110#.

Biggest deer I ever weighed from my area was 185#'s.

LOL,,, sounds like our bunch, only we have a kitty on who can shoot the buck with the ugliest rack. There has been some really ugly ones come through over the years. I won one year with a spike I shot. The left tine went almost straight up for about 10 inches, and the right on went up about 8 and made an abrupt right angle turn, when I shot him his head was turned and it looked like he had the number 17 on his head,,lol. I was going to mount the skull but the damned mice ate most of it while it was in the barn, at least I think it was mice cause we dont have any porkies around here

About 10 or 12 years ago Ruger did a remake of the .44 mag semi auto. I bought one it was expensive like $500. , there was an article in Guns and Ammo magazine about it and I preordered one. I never shot it. Had it for a couple years and needed some dough and sold it for $750. NIB.
Now my daughter is 13 and were going deer hunting this fall and I really wish I had not sold that rifle. I looked at Rugers website and they don't show the rife there so I assume its no longer made.
Any suggestions on a first deer rifle for a teen girl.

WFM, I bought my daughter a youth Remington 700, .243 caliber. Nice gun for the money. Bought my son a youth Ruger .308. Son has outgrown his gun long ago and claims he has rights to my Remington 760 pump.

243 would be a great choice. Not much recoil and plenty of knock down.

Reguardless of caliber I'd suggest a bolt action or single shot either one. Teach her from the start to make every shot count. Knowing you have a quick 2nd shot sometimes leads to poor judgement and rushing a bad shot.

My dad started me with a Ruger #3 and said make each shot like it's the only one you'll ever make.

I don't own a .243 and have never shot one, I was looking at Kittery Trading Post before coming back here and was thinking of the .243 , I saw a Ruger .243 bolt action for about $450. and they had a lot of CZ-usa bolt action in .243 , Thanks for the replies. Gun shopping this weekend.

I'd second the 243 advise. Use good bullets. If your heart is set on a. 44 or if you're in a pistol caliber area ruger has an M77. 44 and. 357.. 44s and 357s can be had in lever action but I don't care for them for a beginner.

Both my girls got Winchester Mdl 70's in .243. The girls hunted for years and never saw a need for anything bigger. They killed everything they wanted to when they shot it with the.243.
Don't underestimate that little 6mm lots of critters have wound up in the freezer due to them.
