1984 machine in terrific condition. The steering can be normal one moment, and the next it's quite hard to turn. Always, well 95% of the time it's kept out of the weather. No noise, or any other sign of malfunction. I suspect a steering box problem, but can't be sure. Any help would be appreciated.

The box on that model is VERY complicated!
How are you with complicated mechanical things?
Also how long has it been since it's had a fluid and filter change?
That model has it's own section of the hydraulic pump to run the PS, if that section is bad the steering is the only part hydraulically effected, there is no external regulators or reliefs they are all built into the steering box.
Here is what the box and pump looks like:

Thanks Wolfman, that's a great help. I knew it would be complicated. I will do a filter and hyd fluid change first, and if no luck, I will talk to a local and well-respected shop to rebuild the pump. The drawings scare the bejesus out of me. Thanks again.

I would say that is complicated. Fluid flush and refill and if any adjustments could be made as per manual may be worth a try.
