Hello!

New to the forum and I have an issue. I have an old T1400H and it's been a great mower till now. I've replaced the battery and it will start fine but after an hour or so the battery is dead and I can't get it started unless I charge the battery.

What charges the battery? Could a part of the charging system fail and what should I look for? I'm very mechanically minded so throw some ideas my way!

There is 2 basic parts that make up your charging system, Coil charger and a rectifier.
Look for blow fuses or bad connections or broken wires first.

The coil charger puts out a Pulsed power output like an ignition coil but much weeker amps, that signal goes to the rectifier and is turned into pulsed DC power.
You can test it with a simple test light the output off of the coil sould just pulse, faster with higher RPM and then the output of the rectifier should also pulse power.
Here are the 2 parts.

Coil charger (not the same as an ignition coil, or what they call a magneto)

Rectifier
