Hello forum,
For my first post I unfortunately need to ask for help. I bought a 1981 B7100HST-D last Sunday, everything worked as it should and then I took it around my yard Monday morning and ran it through al the gears with no issues(high and low range since it’s HST). Parked it until Wednesday when I went to move it again and now I have nothing. It just lugs the engine down a bit when I press either the forward or rear pedal. So far I have cleaned the strainers/new fluid/hst filter. I did find a good amount of metal in the case when I had the strainers out. At this point I know I’m going to have to almost certainly split the tractor and get to the internals. I guess the question is with metal being in the transmission case could the HST be working still and maybe it’s a issue with something in the rear or the high/low gears? TPH still raises and the rear pto spins fine. The B219 loader is running off its own pump so no way to check hydro off the HST. Anyways just really bummed out, paid 4K for it with 3200 hours. :/

I wish haha sorry no I meant that parking brake is off. If the cooler is clogged or hydro pump are bad can that cause the HST to not work

If you remove the cover in front of the seat you should be able to see if the driveshaft from the clutch housing to the hydrostat is spinning.

If the PTO is spinning and stays spinning when you push the pedal forward or reverse, the clutch is good.
If the three point will raise then the hydro pump is working.

If both are good then you either do not have it in a range or the HST has an issue. ;)

Yes the PTO stays running, TPH raises and the input is spinning when clutch is released. Damn guess I’ll be splitting the tractor. Really hoping I can just find a good used trans since I read a couple people rebuild theirs for a lot of money/ went the cheap route and didn’t fix it. Where is the best place to split the tractor to get at the trans?

As NIW mentioned - make sure it's in gear. I thought I had a serious problem with my Ford tractor years ago. When I dismounted I must have bumped the H-N-L lever into N.

You say “it rolls freely”. Mine only does that if the high/ low range selector is in neutral. In either high or low there is resistance to rolling. Neutral lies between the two ranges. It seems unlikely to have the hydro die while sitting.
Also - please tell us what you refilled the tranny with. You cleaned the screens, did you replace the canister filter as well?

I can feel it click into low and high when I move the lever, unless something on the shift fork broke. I replaced the HST filter on top as well. Good amount of silver and goldish colored material in case where the strainers sat. Can HST material get into the main case? Or would it end up in the filter. Super UDT from local Kubota dealer

Something just isn't right, HST very very rarely just go out.
I'm sticking with something is not in the right position.
Are you 100% sure your moving the range lever?
And if you are are you moving it all the way into gear?

When you push the pedal does it change sounds?

Let me guess when you depress the hydro pedal Forward or Reverse the engine loads but your tractor does not move? It acts the same whether it is in Low, Neutral or High? If you keep playing with it the tractor will try to move the opposite direction of the pedal and sometimes it will drive fine?

If these are your symptoms, the locating dowel pin between the hydrostat motor block and the hydro case is broken or wallowed out. I have had 3 B7100s in the last year with the same problem. The case is not available as a separate part. The only recourse is a new hydro, used hydro or salvage parts. A couple weeks ago a new hydro was approx $10,000.00. :(

I would think a decent machinist could fix a wallowed out hole for a lot less $$$ than that!
Took the words right out of my mouth...

So I took it outside(rolled it) to wash it up for any impending tear down that may happen and I noticed one thing that may make a difference. No matter what position the low/high range level was in L-N-H i was still able to push by hand the tractor with the same effort. Which now makes me think maybe the fork? Could be broken or damaged in the gear transmission. I left the tractor in N when I parked it this past Monday after it was working. Maybe the HST is fine and i just have no way to put it in low or high. I saw there’s like a top to the gear transmission where the lever goes in the side. Can I remove that with the whole thing together to atleast get a look inside?

With the engine off and clutch released, engage the PTO. Can you turn the PTO shaft? If so, I would suspect the clutch.

Hi Nemx735, I am also unclear on when you changed the fluid and filter - before or after the problem?
