The carb needs to be cleaned better, maybe a rebuild kit. But it is most definitely the carb. Did you blow air through the holes, do the needle valves look okay, and so on?

Check the linkage that goes to the governor.
But do agree it could also be the carb having a plugged jet.

I second that the carb needs to be cleaned more thoroughly. It can be a tiny speck of something in a passageway. I always completely disassemble, clean good with 2+2 Gumcutter, then blow air through every passage.
When it has to have choke to run, something is restricting fuel passage in the carb.
Do you run ethanol-enriched gas in it? That will gum up and cause problems, every time.

How old is the fule you're running through it? This is where a can of Trufuel can clean things up and make it run...

if its been sitting a while with gas in it, some of it may have, for lack of a better term, gelled. I had this happen a while back and it turned out to be a clogged passage from old fuel. If it were mine I'd look in the main jet from the bowl to venturi and make sure its completely open. A through cleaning, possibly rebuilt kit, and tuning should clear it right up.

Seafoam or some-such and a couple of tanks of fuel run through the engine... Should clear it up just fine.

Does it have a low oil pressure shut-off solenoid on the bottom of the carb bowl??? If so, remove it and inspect the plunger to see if it is stuck/sticking. It should move easily. If it is stuck clean it up until it moves very freely then re-assemble. If it is sticking closed or part way closed it will starve the motor for fuel (that's how it shuts it off when the oil gets low). Have run into this a couple of times.

If you really want to clean a carb then go get yourself an ultrasonic cleaner. Your carb will love you for it. I use mine all the time and it will reach hard to get areas that are normally impossible to get otherwise.

Anytime you have to run with the choke on you are being starved for fuel somewhere. Take the carb apart, clean thoroughly and retry.

Seek out a fuel supplier who carries ethanol-free gas and don't use anything else in your gas powered outdoor equipment. I think puregas.com is the name of one website and there are others as well.

The earth-friendly regime who brought you Tier IV emissions rules for your new diesel are now pushing for 15% ethanol in your gas.

Down here in Md we only have a couple county's that are allowed to sell the pure gas. But all the airports have 100 LL with no alcohol

Try cheap first.

Disassemble carb and boil the heck out of it in plain water in crock-pot.

Reassemble with new gaskets and parts and see what happens.

Sounds weird but has worked repeatedly.

Tried adding just a few drops of liquid detergent, couldn't see any difference in how well the process worked and then had to clean residue by dunking repeatedly in alcohol and carb cleaner. Stay with plain water.

Thanks guys,
I got soooo pizzzed, if I had a BFH I would have worked on it one wack at a time, then I dumped in a BUNCH of sea foam fired it up and let it run with the choke half way about 10 min the sound changed and it has been running fine ever since,, knocking on wood here,,
What ever I missed the first 2 times I took it all apart I guess the sea foam dissolved or washed out

You will likely be surprised at how inexpensive an entirely new carburetor is for that thing.

I had a Honda generator that did the same thing when my BIL left auto gas in it. (I never use autogas in generators, I use avgas which will store for many years.)

I priced a new carb from Honda and it was $35.
I priced a new (identical) carb from China and it was $18 thru ebarf.

That price difference will likely disappear soon due to King Donald, so act quickly.

uhhh, this thread is from 2013. Is there a particular reason for reviving it now?
