Been lurking around here for a while but finally posting. Picked up an old and extremely crusty L1500 that I'll be tinkering on. I've spent hours on here researching and I'm sure many more to come. Any tips and tricks are welcome.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll check out your pics and once I get a few more posts on here I'll be posting mine.

Here's one of how I found her, sad sad shape and probably beyond worth fixing if it weren't for me just wanting something to tinker with.

That is sad, but at least they covered the exhaust.

Yup, sad sight indeed. And very lucky the exhaust was covered as I've found no signs of water in the oil.
You wouldn't normally find water in the oil, but you would find a motor that was seized up. :(

Well, I was pleasantly surprised this weekend when after just a little work freeing up the throttle and removing some things I was able to get it to fire up. It doesn't have a functioning cooling system so was only a short time but it ran and surprisingly well. Running 100% Diesel Purge.

I see some cooling system parts, what's missing?

Wolfman, see the below pic. I've already removed the radiator which I'm pretty sure is beyond repair as well. You'll see the water flange that bolts to the head is non existent and there is a sizable hole in the water cover as well. I think the lower radiator hose connection on the gear cover although pitted will still suffice. I need to pull that all off and check the water pump which I suspect is going to be shot but we'll see.

YIKES!

What were they running that in...

And

What were they running in it...

I'm guessing saltwater, or acid.

I've never seen one rotted out like that!

I would be real worried about internal damage and or the head gasket damage!

You are either real ambitious, really optimistic, or real crazy... or All Three... I'm going with all three!

There is no water pump as far as I know.

These were thermosiphon systems so no thermostat or water pump involved.
