There is an ad directly beneath the search feature and when trying to use the search the drop down comes on top of the ad. As soon as I type anything the ad opens up.

you ought to download "adblock" or "adblock pro" both are free and both stop those ads so you can click on what you need to do.

I've been having a similar problem the last week or so. While typing in the search box, the box will just disappear on me for no apparent reason. There's no ad covering it, but it does seems likely that ad activity might be playing a role here. I'm using Chrome on Windows 7.

You could always try to use google to search for keywords within a specific website.
For example, I want to search for information on how to break in my tractor. You could type this in google
"break in" site:www.orangetractortalks.com
