If it's a cable driven gauge, start at the gauge and work your way back.
If this is the model I'm thinking of they tend to shear off the drive where they connect to the motor.
On my old L185 whatever the cable plugged into in the motor was shot. That seemed more of a repair than I wanted to tackle, so it said 749 hours for about 25 years..
