General timing and valve lash question is i have my V2203 torn down and timed the front gearing with appropriate timing marks aligned on all gears and at this point the rear cylinder it as TDC compression stroke.
My question is does Kubota start their cylinder numbering from rear as number 1 or front cylinder as Number 1?
I do not have the clutch housing or flywheel mounted to see where the #1 TDC lines up yet but seeing that the rear cylinder is the one on tdc compression with all the timing marks of gear train aligned leads me to believe they number and time things off of rear being number one. There are a few other engines gas and diesel i have worked on over the years that number from rear to front.

I think I remember the crank key way in the 12 o'clock position being TDC when I put mine back together. but not 100% memory, I'm getting old

It's very easy to set the valve lash on these, just rotate the crank watch the valve and you can see it rise and fall, go a little past where it fell and adjust to spec, twice around and you'll be golden. ;)

I know how to set the valve lash i was just wondering why the rear cylinder was the cylinder on TDC compression when the gear train is all timed to the timing mark indicators on all the gears, Never seen this on any engine before. It is always the front cylinder or #1 that is on TDC compression once the gear train is timed. Must be a wierd Kubota thing I guess.

Techniclly they don't start with the rear being #1 it's the front that is #1.
Both #1 and #4 are at TDC at the same time. ;)
So are you sure the rear #4 was on the compression stroke and it wasn't #1 on that stroke?

Valves are loose on the rear #4 cylinder and they are in transition on #1 front with timing marks on all gears aligned.;)
