I bought a used Mx5100 in Nov (128 hrs). Great tractor!
We had a could snap(low 30's) I went to start it after letting the glow plug engage for about a minute. There's a fast tapping sound near the front of the engine. After about 2 minutes it clears up. Doesn't do it at all when it's 50* or warmer. I've changed the oil but it's still doing it.
Should I be worried?
Thanks for any advice.
Here's a link to YouTube with the sound.
Sorry I'm moving it so much. I'm trying to get different vantage points.

I'm almost certain it's coming from oil filter. Surely some of you boys up north have heard something like this! Anybody? Going to try an oil additive. Still concerned about it though!
Thanks again!

That sounded stronger on the alternator side, and it sounded electrical, more like a buzz than a tap.

You could try removing the alternator belt and starting it to see if it makes the noise. If not, then it's something in the alternator. If so, then put the belt back on and start using a mechanics stethoscope to isolate the location of the tap/buzz.

That's what I would do in any case. Others might know exactly what that is.

Tried applying oil to tach cable. And removed belt to alternator no change in sound. Added Lucas oil treatment. Still no change. Some one mentioned drivetrain lash! Any ideas?
Thanks!

Using a stethescope, very effective in locating a noise source. High pitch noise as i hear it almost sounds like a ball bearing going bad.not knowing the physiology of that motor, i dont know were such bearings could be.

As a possible alternative. Check if the cooling fan is hitting something.

My cold Michigan tractors clank a little on start up until they warm up a bit. But not like that.

Now when I put the botched out of spec. re-cored radiator back on my big red tractor the thing wasn't quite in operational specifications and the fan was hitting the cooling shroud. It sounded a lot like that!

Im with philztoyz, look at the fan, maybe even unbolt it and crank it. i do assume the buzzing sound is what you mean?

Check the shroud for missing paint, feel the ends of the blades.

Next spots to check would be water pump, fan, alternator. ;)
Pull the belt run it a for about 30 sec or less and check for noise, if it disappears then check all three components, it will probably present it's self as a tight spot.

I don't think that it's valve train- the frequency of the sound is too fast.
