My real axle seal is leaking. If I remove the 4 bolts pictured on the cap will the axle just pull out? Is there anything inside the rear end that hold the axle or that will come apart if I pull out the axle?

I did one about 30 years ago.

Seriously...

I think you have to remove the axle housing. IIRC there's a gear, and a pressed bearing, then a clip that's got to come off.

If you remove those 4 bolts, where's the "cover" going to go? It can't slide over the axle, flange is in the way--unless the entire axle can come out (which I don't think it can).

Look at the parts illustrations, it might give you a better idea, or as they say in the south, a "better ID".

I know the cover can't slide over the axle flange. I just thought it might be like a ford 9" rear end. You take the 4 bolts off and the axle and cap come of. Replace seal and re assemble.

Yes it's as lugbolt thinks, you have to remove the entire housing, not just the end cap, and remove the nut on the end of the axle to replace the seal.
