Most low end 'welding' gloves feel like they are made out of 1/2" plywood, 3/4" after you scorch them. I prefer regular leather work gloves. If you go that route, they need to be loose enough to get them off in a hurry. Not uncommon to get a red-hot booger in them! For me, it's worth it for the increase in dexterity. YMMV :)

Been working with some 1/4 & 3/8" stuff lately....there's a certain sound/sharpness I like to hear from the arc/contact of my MIG....with experience, maybe I'll learn what it needs to sound like for 16 gauge, etc.

My 16 gauge mig welding often comes with a "whooshing" sound as I blow through it!

The course isn’t cheap, but then nothing worth having/doing is. If the course is a lot of welding there is the cost of supplies. No matter what you decide, go on line and buy a copy of Lincoln’s Lessons in Arc Welding. It is a great reference work and an industry standard teaching tool.
