Most forums have a size limit to reduce the server-side stress for searching for really short words like "and", "the", "how" and so on. As olthumpa as pointed out, there are work-arounds.

3 characters and less is the norm search limitation of bulletin boards.
Surprised that ** worked. Google and probably other search engines have removed that wildcard and other wildcard ways of searching. Was told that did it cause too many discovered it was a back door to hidden portions of website data etc.

For an even better search that wont bog down their servers, just use google:
