This is with one of my G5200's.

After putting the mower deck on and engaging the PTO, it makes one heck of a rattling/ bearing noise. Almost sounds like something is hitting. With everything off, I turned the blades and can't find a thing. The only thing I have to go by is that the mower worked fine last fall (on a different G) and the tractor didn't make any noise with the PTO engaged before installing the mower. Granted, this would have been without a load.

I've replaced a u joint and splined yoke on the gearbox side, the deck belt, gearbox oil, and deck tensioner pulley bearings. Everything is greased and seems tight with no play. *The deck is clean with no packed grass on the bottom by the way.

Maybe it's the propeller shaft in front of the fan. The connections at both ends of the shaft could have some wear and the extra load causes them to flex.

It turned out to be the entire u joint assembly.. most likely the gearbox side since that has the new stuff. In my original post, I forgot to mention I also replaced the yoke that connects to the mower's gearbox.

I had a complete replacement that I swapped out and the vibration went away. I'm glad the issue is fixed, but frustrated at the same time because I don't know what the original issue was.

If the drive-line you removed has smooth operation and no play then other issues need to be considered.

This information is more intended to alert you to certain phenomenon associated with simple U joints which are unlike modern front wheel drive cars constant velocity axle joints.

Phasing is the process of aligning the universal joint yokes on both ends of the drive shaft (or double u-joint)in a parallel fashion. If the joints are not properly phased, they will operate at varying speeds throughout each revolution which can cause second-order vibrations.

I'm using Kubota parts so theoretically, the angles shouldn't be incorrect.

Also, the splines have a slot that allow for only one way to go together.

All good. What I have seen in the past is a machinist shorten or lengthen a pto shaft for a friend and they fail to index the shaft and suddenly the shaft is vibrating like crazy.

You could take the old shaft to a truck place specializing in drive lines. Ask them to balance it. In doing so they will find if it is slightly bend. Something is making it vibrate and they are so expensive you do not want o just throw it out as unusable.

Thanks for the links. Yeah, these parts are somewhat hard to find.. the male splined part being discontinued apparently so there will be no tossing it into the trash.

We have a drive line shop locally (Fort Wayne Clutch) that I've thought about taking it to for a balance and/ or an answer as to what's going on.
