Has anyone here replaced the piston rings on their 3-cyl diesel engine? I have some blow-by that I want to eliminate and hopefully will keep me away from a major overhaul. Is this common? Any special tools other than maybe a ring compressor?

Thanks,
Phil

If you are just replacing the rings...which I've never done on a diesel, you will also need a cylinder hone. Like the ones you put on a drill, nothing fancy, and hone those walls before you put in new rings.

Well as you can see from the pic below, I have stripped down the engine and sent the head off to have it magnafluxed. Besides replacing the piston rings, I'm also going to replace the main bearings, rod bearings and the head bolts.

I also have a list of other items like all the coolant hoses, thermostat, tach cable, fan belt, glow plugs, muffler and a hand full of gaskets- head/intake/exhaust etc.

Pistons, liners and head look good. Also having the radiator boiled out and pressure checked.
