I've got a gear driven Kubota L3301. Only 1 week old. Every time I try putting it in 3rd or 4th gear, it whines for 2 or 3 seconds before it allows me to put it in gear. Now I don't push on it that long. But that's how long it takes everything to sync up and allow me to put it in gear. Its worse the higher my RPM is set. Is there something that I can adjust on the clutch to help it to dis-engage better?

Ever hear the phrase, "Find it! Don't grind it!"
That's what I think of every time I try putting it in 3rd or 4th gear...

I wouldn't shift at a high RPM. Most gear driven tractors I've used my whole life I've slowed the engine before shifting.

I use the foot throttle mostly with mine so always shifting at low rpm, but to answer your question you won’t be able to shift it like a car while moving. Also moving the range selector into neutral will make it easier to shift gears from my experience. My tractor pretty similar to yours, just the previous series

From the Operators Manual, page 33:

IMPORTANT
A To change speeds, press the clutch pedal completely down and stop the tractor before attempting to proceed with speed change.

I know if you do it just right you can change gears while moving, but I do stop my L3901DT before changing gears.

My M9's have a synchromesh main box and I shift on the fly but I always double clutch them (tongue in cheek because there is no dry clutch, just a wet pack). I can clutchless shift them but I have t carefully match the ground speed and engine speed.

I don't shift gears while moving. In fact, a very slow roll usually prevents the gear grinding. I'm talking about standing totally still, clutch pressed in all the way, starting from neutral... the gears grind trying to put it in 3rd or 4th. I will try to keep the RPM's as low as possible and see if that helps. Is there no adjustment in the clutch pedal to dis-engage just a little more? It's hard to pull OUT of gear sometimes too.

Put the range selector (high low reverse on your left side) in neutral when trying to shift it

I don't think I have a range selector like that...
I have a gear drive transmission. With a High/Low lever (turtle/rabbit) and a Forward/Reverse lever. But I do have neutral on both of those. I'll see if that helps at all.

I’m sorry I forgot the 3301 was electronic controlled engine, mine more similar to the 2501. But put the forward/reverse in neutral and try it. Does yours have a foot throttle on it?

After reading you comments about having issues getting it out of gear as well as into gear, I'd say you have a clutch release freeplay issue. IOW, the clutch needs adjusted.

That's wonderful, but has nothing to do with the OP's question.

IIRC, the L3301 is synchronized in third and fourth. You should be able to shift into/out of third and fourth without stopping. Not so, first and second, which are not synchronized.

It will shift easier with time as things wear in.

I don't think 3rd and 4th are synchronized on this machine. They are on the MX series...maybe on the L4701 which is pretty different than the 3301/3901. The only thing synchronized is the shuttle.

But yeah, it should start getting easier over time.

You could be right.

My dealer told me that third and fourth (only) were synchronized when I considered one a few years ago but I did not verify it and he's told me other things that were not correct also.

I contemplating buying an L2501 gear-drive before ultimately getting an L2501 HST. The L2501 gear drive had no synchronized gears. Although there are a few differences between the 3301 and the 2501, they are very similar.

On Kubota's website under specs, they only list a synchronized shuttle for gear drive 2501/3301/3901 gear driven tractors. On the MX series, for example, they specifically list 3rd and 4th being synchronized on the web specs.

Although perfectly fine, it's clear to me the standard L series is the most economy of perhaps the entire Kubota tractor line.
