As some of you have seen we have been under a spam attack since around Wed. or Thurs. of last week.

North Idaho Wolfman does a great job catching them and deleting spam during the week since it seems to happen after I head to work. Friday I sat in front of the putter for most the day to keep heading them off as fast as I could. Did the same on Sat.

Sunday I work and apparently, some of the day, so did NIWM thus the board got a bit packed with spam while we were away. Just cleared them up when got home around 10ish pm.

Mr. K is working to ban the members that NIWM and myself have identified as spammers and he is also looking into giving us moderators more tools to use to cut the head of the snake off when they try it again.

Do you need any temporary moderators to act on spam?

Bottom left red framed triangle and put in a simple post of reported.
If you see someone else has already reported it, save me the extra email and don't report it again. ;)

Re: Spam Attack !@#$%

We went through this on a Rhino forum I moderated a few years back, went from a couple spams a week to exactly 80 per week, then 80 per day, then 80 per hour. (robot spammer from china)
The owners of the forum finally stopped it by instituting changes in the registration & sign on processes, but I think those same safeguards have been in place on this forum all along, so I'm afraid I have no helpful suggestions, other than a B2 or ICBM strike.

A couple of times I've been guilty of that, but it's probably because two of us have seen & reported the spam at the same time, but I type slower.

our forum is pretty good size....

the only way you can really stop the spammers is if you keep your site private.

(off the web crawler)

live verification & blocking IP ranges from certain area's is really the only other good help you got.

That was more along the lines of what I was thinking. Cactus, seco palm saplings, with an occasional slate road and briar patch for good measure :D

Had tangles with all of them. Surprisingly getting tossed off my four wheeler (during a hold my beer moment) and coming to stop in the middle of a palm patch hugging a baby seco palm was by far the worst. All exposed skin had cuts, bleeding everywhere, and something about those leaves made it itch and burn like a sum beach till you could take a long cold shower and scrub the crud out.

As someone who knows just enough about computers to be dangerous, I have always wondered, what do the spammers hope to accomplish, and why is everything they post gibberish? I know much of the spam seems to be trying to sell stuff. Has this ploy EVER worked? My wife worked for a while in a business that sadly used telemarketing calls to help generate new customers. The company was struggling with the fact that I knew long before them that telemarketing is almost completely dead. If you make 100 phone calls, 50% don't answer, 40% will hang up in the first 5 seconds, and 9 1/2% hang up after a minute or two. When she finally left, they were making about 200 phone calls to get ONE demonstration. About 1 in 400 to make a sale. Some of the callers were going three and four DAYS without even getting a foot in the door. The Spam seems to make even less sense than that does.
