So far I figured out the PTO (originally thought it was ranges but didn't effect driving speed haha), 3pt hitch, yes, the hi/lo range lever, the park brake, and that is about it other than the loader controls. I know there is a diff lock but I don't really know how it works, and I don't know how to take it out of 4wd (can you?).

What is the proper way to shut it down without using the decompression pull?

Any other pointers?

Assuming it is similar to my L185...

To shut down there is a lever down low on right side, about 1/16 thick and an inch tall. Has a notch for a finger on bottom side. Take tractor to idle and then hold lever up until tractor dies.

Differential lock is a pedal (rod) and is near your right heel. Stop the tractor wheels from turning, depress pedal and slowly let out clutch. You will probably feel the pedal depress a little further when a pin engages its notch. Then both rear wheels will drive or spin together. Do not engage if the wheels are spinning or you may shear the pin in two.

Under the seat between your knees is a knob that controls the speed of the 3PH lowering action. It can still be raised but lowering speed will be changed

100td,
A 2wd manual isn't going to do him that much good in figuring out how to shift the 4wd in and out now is it. :p
I don't suppose it would, is that what YOU gave him?:p

I'm sure the L245DT (DT=Dual Traction) manual I have linked will suit him just fine and show him where the 4WD lever is, and it will also show him where everything else he doesn't know about is as well!

Ah, thanks! That all makes a little more sense now. The manual is a huge help - I'm pretty tall so the seat adjustment information from the manual is a huge bonus.

The file heading in your link says L245F = 2WD, I didn't open it to see that it included the DT too, My bad! ;)

Not sure I've given any advice to you but there is a full parts manual with exploded diagrams here
http://www.kubotabooks.com/AutoIndex/index.php?dir=Tractor%20Parts%20Manuals/&file=L245dt.pdf
It can be handy to have for a quick look when doing maintenance or repairs. If you want to order parts you can go off these numbers but updated ones would be available on line at kubota.com I expect.
Also a shop manual here, it downloads without the mirror effect
