Bx 1880 loses rpm

Tractor has 9 hrs. If I put it to full throttle which isn’t often it drifts down below 540 pto run spot. It goes from 3800 to 3200. The throttle lever actually moves. It’ll go back to 3800and stay if I hold it. Can you guys help me out here?

Follow the linkage under the throttle control - there is a "nut" that grips another - you need to tighten this at this friction point.

and you should not be running that machine at WOT with that few hours.:)

I would not go past 3200 (PTO speed).....for the next 40 some hours.

I'm also surprised about being able to reach 3800 RPM. I've got the previous version, a BX1870, and full rpm reads 3300 on my tachometer, with 3100 corresponding to 540 on the rear pto, iirc. What's the rated (540 pto) engine speed on your 1880?

I didn't think there were any changes to the engine/drive ratios between models, but now I'm wondering.

Googling images for 'BX1880' instrument cluster shows a PTO range from 3,200-4,000 engine rpm. My guess is that 540 PTO speed is somewhere between 3,200 and 3,500 rpm on the tachometer.

That's a better picture than the one I looked at. I failed to notice the yellow PTO range stopping at 3,400 but, you are right.

I just wonder if the 80 Series has an improved fuel gauge. It's the one thing on our BX1870 that has failed to impress...

Lot of Kubota's run harder than people think they should. BX's included. Some of the old G-series D722 and D782 engines ran closer to 3600-ish too; but some guys on here said I was full of it and that they only run about 2000.

Nope...been in this game a long time and know my mowers fairly well. I ain't perfect, though.

D722 on my G1900 runs 3600-ish. But a D722 on a K008R runs 2000. Same engine. And same engine on a small refrigerator runs 1800. I say "same" engine-but they're not....just same displacement....another subject for another day (a D722 can have a bunch of variations including a turbocharged version).

And finally...I've known "diesel guys" that have had BX's and are afraid to run them more than 1/2 throttle. And wonder why they're low on power and run hot all the time. They're designed to run close to max throttle, so run them that way. Lasts longer. If it won't hold throttle, adjust the tension nut on the bottom of the lever so that it will.

I run our Bx1850 at 80% or more throttle with the mower deck, which is around 3100 RPM. For loader work, I run at closer to 60% throttle, about 2400 RPM. There just is no need for more power for those tasks. The machine runs out of traction long before it's out of horsepower.

If the tractor ever runs hot, it's because the radiator screen is clogged with debris.

Don't forget about the HST...it ain't got no cooler. Just a fan on the drive shaft. So the faster the fan turns the more air it pumps over the HST; thus lugging it around can cause it to run hot. I've had to replace HST's for this exact reason; and trust me...you don't want to have to do that. This is also why I suggest using SUPER UDT2 only in these (no oil cooler).
