Awesome start.

I can see that lazy helper of yours is pretty much worthless. He is just hanging around to be fed. LOL... Just like mine. :)

Thanks Ray -

Tool of choice is 4 lb dead blow hammer. Does go quickly with that, with a few casualties....

Keep trying to get “Ollie” to swing it, but he keeps telling me he doesn’t have thumbs!![emoji12]

The guy I watched just pulled the paver into position and then set it down with hardly any force. They all jiggle a little when you compact them. The sand fills in the "tweens."

I like your pattern. I'd probably screw that up! Are you going to set the outside soldier row in concrete or pin it with pins and metal border?

I am going to do my driveway entrance to stop my driveway rocks from "migrating" into the streets in monsoon and winter rains. We are trying to work a deal with local installers on weekends for most of the neighbors before they re-pave our street. If not, I may do mine myself. I have two lazy dogs to supervise me.

Ray - -

Yeah, my 4lb hammer does some of the work a tamper does after everything is laid. Polymeric sand will fill the joints from the top.

I will use a plastic landscape edging.
I honestly didn’t research it much; bought the heaviest stuff Lowe’s had. I didn’t see any metal types, and wonder if they’d hold up to salt, etc.
Mine should be covered, and I’ll augment their 8” plastic spikes with 10” and 12” galvanized spikes at a closer spacing than the destructions call for.

This is a piece just laid down. Tried it rotated 180*, but pavers don’t lay on nail heads well. The nail flange will be backfilled. Seems they’re ~ $1.25/ foot or so.

Palmerton, Pennsylvania,
I just did a big paver sidewalk. I did a lot of research. From what all the “pros” say, use NON galvanized spikes. They say you want them to rust in. That way they dont pop up over the yrs. I used 10” spikes and way over did it. I went through 320 of them.

I’m so glad you posted that, ‘Buck!!

I was honestly thinking the same thing about steel spikes, and them rusting in versus galvanized.

I bought a bunch of 12” steel spikes while back for this project. Later got some galvanized because I figured I really don’t know what I’m doing.......[emoji12]

I might get more steel to finish the job. I’m driving many into washed stone, so I went 12 instead of 8 or 10.

Thanks!![emoji106]

Not trying to be a wise acre, but you do know you turn the edging around to install it, that way the spiles and plastic are under the row of bricks. ;)

Not at all Wolfman....point taken.

Destructions show it both ways... most other way......I’m a left handed redneck, so I’m good with that.[emoji12]

Pavers don’t set worth a shit flipped around....nail heads in the way. Drive them more and the edging breaks.

You bet!!

Lead, follow, or get out of the way!![emoji106]

Seriously, Thanks for pointing that out, because it had both my wife and I baffled. We were reading it correctly....I just didn’t like how it worked the “right” way.

She was astounded that I even looked at the destructions first!

I’ve got ~ 50’ of 1 1/4 x 1/8” angle.....in a pinch....[emoji12]

I NEVER seen edging installed the way your claiming. NEVER. I have seen and been around countless patio/sidewalk jobs too. (Have many friends that own hardscaping companies).Plus unless your doing a straight run, you would never get the edging TIGHT against your last course of pavers. Hell, i used a bar clamp to pull my edging super tight against mine before spiking.
It also seems like there is a “new” method of laying pavers compared to 10yrs ago. All the people ive spoke with about pavers that USED to do them all explained it very differently then the people that are CURRENTLY doing these job. I guess at the end of the day, there is real no right or wrong way, as long as the project gets completed nicely!

‘Buck - the destructions clearly show the edging installed the way Wolfman mentioned.

I’m doing it bassakwards, so to speak, because it didn’t make sense following the destructions.

You’re saying I’ve got it right, or do I have it wrong?!?!

I’m not picking an argument, because I don’t know either way!!![emoji12]
I’m an idiot; ask my wife!![emoji15]

I did get more steel spikes for the job...thanks for the tip! [emoji106]

Your pic of the edging is how i did mine and how all the hardscaping companies around here do it.

Super!!

I got one right by not following the destructions!!
Thanks again!

Getting closer. ~1,000 pavers down and 3-400 to go.

Had a couple snags.

4lb deadblow mallet, meet Mr. Thumb....soaked through glove in 5 seconds.......didn’t really want to take that glove off to see what I did.....

But, we finished main part, ~1,200 pavers, and got polymeric sand down and watered. Happy as hell with it so far.

Been there, done that.
Pavers look great, especially when you consider they were installed by an injured man.:D
