I am new to tractors, so bare with me.

I noticed yesterday that there is a screen on the inside (fan side) of the radiator. It appears the fan has torn mine.

Should this be replaced? If so, why? What is its purpose?

this is something that needs to be looked into! :D;)

yes - absolutely !:)

it is a pre screen - helps get the radiator from getting all that small crap stuck in it!

But it is on the fan side, not the front grill side.

Do these tractors push air through the radiator from the engine compartment rather than pulling air through the grill?

It can use either fan. Just start it and check the grill side of the radiator. You should be able to tell if it uses a sucker or blower fan :D

on the bx series the air is pulled from the operator legs back into the screen then through the radiator, out towards the front.

is this standard part or is this a homemade screen?

got any pictures? :)

Will post some pics later. From what I saw it looks to be original.

Someone just posted in here their repair of this or similar OEM screen. ahhhhh..... here it is

http://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21263&highlight=screen

Not sure if they are fine enough but Hardware stores sell stick on screen repair patches. They also sell kits to make your own screens that may work as well. To get a smaller mesh patterned material than what hardware store has maybe overlap in a second layer off set of the other one for a finer total mesh?

nice work Geo.....

that is a suction screen and would catch a lot of bugs, chafe and what not ......

I made one back in 85 for a FORD F250 truck - had a piece of porch screen, lasted 25 years, when the truck was worn out the radiator looked brand new!

I saw the repair post. Had it not been for that, I would not have thought this was so important. Will post a pic and look for a temp repair for now
