i have a problem with the sight glass for checking the hydraulic oil in my l3800.i had a leak and when i started adding oil back it ran out the filler plug and i could never see it on the sight glass. anyone else have this problem?

Sight glasses when completely full can look empty. But most have a white backing. I would drain the fluid down to about the middle of the site glass. It makes it easier to tell where the fluid level is at 
my problem is i watched the glass while my son added oil and it never showed on the glass, then it ran out the filler. we then drained out a gallon and a half but never saw the oil on the glass.this tractor has less than a hundred hrs on it. by the way thanks for the reply. by the way ,the glass does have a white backing

Yes over filled case can cause some serious issues, it can blow seals, and damage valves and other systems.
Drain the fluid down until you can see the level.

I had same problem. I cleaned around site glass and carefully unscrewed the glass with a clean pan under it. When it drains down you can put the glass back in and see the white background the others are talking about and can add a little at a time so you will see the change from white to brown.

I always look at it as I get on the seat so it would be not running. Rear implement on the ground.
Some good good machinest on here needs to manufacture a dipstick to replace the fluild fill cap. I hate the sight glass. My deere just had a dipstick on the filler cap and it was much easier to use.

Sure would be good if they dropped a little red dye in the fluid. We could do the same thing couldn't we? Would a couple drops of oil-based stamp pad ink screw up the works? I can't imagine it would.
