Hey all, I have an L260 that hasn't been cranked up for several months. Well I started it up today and it ran wide open no control with throttle lever or shut off lever Had to shut it off by choking off the air Anybody know how to fix this problem? Thanks

Make sure your linkage is all working right to the fuel lever. Was there any blow by on the tractor last time you ran it?? Also what RPM did it run at and did it keep climbing or hold steady at wide open?? Pictures would be great too.

Ok, no problem we are supposed to help each other. By chance would you take a look at your oil level and fuel level. What your describing is a runaway on a diesel. This happens when oil or another oil type substance gets into the cylinder and the engine "runs away" on the oil and starts going faster and faster until it breaks something. I'm glad you were able to get it off when you did. We have to figure out what's getting in there and why. Please report back, also how many hours on the tractor??

Just saw the link he posted. Let us know either way man!

Oil level is good and the fuel tank is about half full. It sounds like the rack may be stuck but I sure don't think ice is the problem today 98 degrees outside. I'll take the little cap off the end and see what I can see. Thanks

Could be as simple as an injector nozzle that is stuck open.
Pull, disassemble, (note all parts location and direction) clean, reassemble, leave injector line loose bled air, tighten line.

Next likely scenario is it's running on oil that has seeped down the valve stems, you will need to replace the valve stem seals.

I missed his icing issue  I was leaning more towards moisture and a sticky rack. Remembered seeing his post and was really detailed about how to get into the injection pump, to fix the rack. Plus he also showed where your drain and fill plugs were for maintaining it :)

Hey guys I went out and started the tractor and held my hand over the breather intake to throttle it back and it finally cleared up and ran right so I'm thinking maybe Millineial was right, oil leaked down and caused it. Whatever it was it will not sit that long without being cranked up again .Thanks to all u guys for your help

I have always felt that diesels should have a butterfly valve on the intake, a simple cable actuator, and a pull knob on the dash that says "Emergency Engine Stop". I swear, it would save a hundred plus engines every year.

Me too, all last winter when the tier iv's were running away, I was thinking a simple mechanical thing, no computer involvement would be good. It would take me 5 min to get the hood open and find something to block the intake with.

Some ingenuity I think you could do this yourself. My recommendation would be to fabricate in an RV sewer tank dump valve. A pull cable could actuate it easily. Here is what they look like. Not all come with cables like below. I think the normal pipe size for these is 3"

That is an interesting thought. I'd worry about the heat, and you'd have to swap the cable to the opposite side so it worked on the pull, not the push. The general design is sound though.

I know my RV gates get a little tough to open so I have to keep the rods lubed with silicone!

This is what I was picturing in my head. It's an exhaust control valve but could easily be on the intake. It's a bit pricey but would be cheaper if mass manufactured across all diesels.
