Hi guys. Started splitting the 7200 this afternoon. The old giirl looks pretty sad. Its been sitting outside for the last 3 months. Everything is done up top. Tomorrow I will climb under and do the hydro line and seperate the front diff, and then look around and see how many things I've missed. I'll keep you guy's posted. The question's should start right shortly.http://http://www.orangetractortalks.comhttp://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3&pictureid=9/forums/album.php?albumid=3&pictureid=10

Well done! Tackling the job yourself. Hats off! If you could snap a few pics as you go that would be cool to see - might help (or scare) others from doing the same thing.

Do keep us posted on your rebuild progress!

Hi Guy. Thanks I'll need all the help I can get. I took a couple of pics but could'nt get them to come up on the post so I put them in my album.

Dusty, was it giving you an error or anything when you tried to post pics? You should be able to add attachments/pictures by clicking on "Manage Attachments" below the editing box and then browsing and uploading a picture or two...

I'll check out those pics in your album now... Yep, looks like you're ripping into it pretty good! That Cub I see in your album there is actually in pretty good shape. How long have you had that?

dusty-t
04-01-2009, 09:36 AM
Actually I've only had it for about three months. I bought it when the 7200 broke or to state it right-- when I broke the 7200. I thought the cub would do untill I got the kubota fixed. NOT A CHANCE!! The Cub is not in bad shape but it needs some TLC. I have it for sale but untill I do some work on it I don't think it will sell. Which is fine by me. Unless someone like me comes along I could'nt sell it the way it is. I'll try to put some more pics up. Kinda got distracted this morning.

Hi Guys. Well it's apart, the clutch is pretty well pooched but the splines are spun smooth as a babies butt. The shaft is not pretty either. I will check the flywheel for flat it has taken some heat.

dusty-t
04-01-2009, 04:23 PM
The rest of the pics are in my album .Pic of the shaft55 Okay I just ordered clutch , pressure plate, release bearing , propeller shaft, clutch pedal spring , pilot bushing . I must really love this Kubota. This thing came apart really nice , somewhere about 5 hrs to this point. I havent taken the shaft out yet. The manual does not give a clear description as to procedure. I'm just gonna rip it out, well not literally, it will come out alright , Just one piece at a time. OK shafts out, parts should be in in the morning.

Nice work. I can appreciate the time it has taken you to get this far. Good news! It goes together faster!!

dusty-t
04-03-2009, 06:17 AM
Hi Guys. This tractor is really nice to work on. The more I work on it the more I appreciate the quality. A couple of questions, 1 the pilot bushing shows very little wear, I will check for play with the new shaft,I know if this bushing isn't right it mess things up. 2 There is a joint at the back of the shaft by the tranny, it seems to be in good shape, but again if its going to be a problem I might as well change it now. Any input would be appreciated, Thanks.

Michael
04-03-2009, 11:04 AM
When ever I replace a clutch pack I always replace the pilot bushing. The main reason is the wear pattern on the old one will not match the new parts and because you are replacing the input shaft it make for strange noises that are hard to find until you have to go back in and do the bushing. So since you are in there it far easier to do it now and put the new part that you already have then to go in a 2nd time.

I always had the opinion that once in and once out. It is far easier to get the things that look worn to replace them now to prevent issues in the future.

I made the same mistake once to save a couple dollars when I did the water pump on my wife's car. I skipped replacing the timing belt and ended up a month later having her car towed back home and I had to go right back in and replace the water pump again along with the timing belt and the pulleys. The water pump was damaged by the belt getting tied up under the pulley.

So save your self a lot of grief and do everything that needs or even things that do not look like needing replacing and do it now.

dusty-t
04-03-2009, 03:19 PM
Thanks Michael. I wish I could say I have only done it once. At least this time I'm not under the gun. I have time to check all the other things you want to check but never have the time. I did replace the pilot bushing and seal. I am leaving the ball joint at the rear of the propeller shaft it looks in good shape once I got it cleaned it up. I want to clean the tractor up a bit, paint the frame and rebuild the hood. I think it was you that left me a link for parts. But no hood. Oh well, it will be fun rebuilding it. But just because I like doing it does not mean I'm any good at it. Thank's for the input.

dusty-t

Son of a U know what. Right clutch wrong pressure plate. You would think a smart guy like me would a checked right away. Not quite as smart as I thought.

Service Dept Vic
04-03-2009, 08:21 PM
The pilot bushing should be changed, and that joint is just fine. Don't forget to 'wire it" back up as it was when you took it apart.

It stops parts from falling during a vertical take-off in your Kubota!

dusty-t
04-04-2009, 04:17 PM
Wrong pressure plate, can't get one till monday. Not the part's guy's fault it was tagged with the right number. At least I'm not stuck for a tractor I've got the 8200.

dusty-t
04-08-2009, 08:27 PM
Well I went and picked up the right pressure plate and it is installed , snapped a bolt off in the flywheel, Lucked out it came out with a punch. Reinstalled and everything is good to go in that end. Tomorrow I will have a crack at putting the propeller shaft back together in the tractor. It's that rear joint that is going to be the problem well not the joint just the spring clip that holds it in place. In the meantime whilest waiting for parts I did some rippin and tearin .

Dusty-t,

I'm liking those "kick-stands" you fashioned to keep that tractor level during the split. I'll bet a few guys missed that very important little item there in your pictures. Nice job! I keep mine handy in the corner of the shop for the exact same purpose.

Oh ya, that pressure plate is just bitched!

OK Guys , the clutch is in the front is connected to the back, push pedal in you can turn the propeller shaft, let the clutch out you can't turn the propeller shaft. Thats as far as I am. I am doing some cleanup and paint work and I want to rebuild the hood. And a bit of work to the power steering cylinder. My son put that clip on the propeller shaft, took him 5 min , I was ticked but thankfull. Everything went together quick after that. Thanks Ben and thanks to Vic and Mr K. and Michael for the encouragement and advice.

dusty-t
04-10-2009, 05:13 PM
Hey guys , I'm still workin away. I thought some people might be interested in the power steering on this thing. I have to modify the rear mount. When I put the cylinder on the tractor I welded the rear mount to the loader frame. No loader now. So I modified the original step support.

04-14-2009, 06:21 PM
Trouble is I (won't) put it back together the way it is. It's going to take me another week to clean and paint the fenders, steps, firewall, rad guard. And then I'll start it up and set up the clutch. And then I get to tackle that hood. And the real trouble is that I will really enjoy all this. But the rest of my equipment especially the zero turn are crying because the 7200 is getting all the attention and its spring and they want to serviced so they can go out and play too. I'm just cryin the blues because this is taking just about as much time as I thought it would!!!!. Thank's for the support Guys, It helps! It does help.

04-15-2009, 06:38 PM
Hey that looks like my hood .I am going to attempt to replace the whole top of the hood and possibly the front six inches. You can't even tell what it is supposed to look like. Now who is the guy that decided to put epoxy on the rad guard. I didn't think I would have to deal with that stuff ever again. At least this time it wasn't a 45 foot flat deck. Great stuff if applied properly but nasty if you have to redo something even if it is twenty years later like the 7200. Anywho I finished painting the rims, nothin special but better than they were. Also got most of the rad guard cleaned and primed. Glad I sprung for the orange and blue Kubota paint. It did a great job on the front axle.

dusty-t
04-16-2009, 06:10 PM
I can put in one picture what I did today. But I did make some headway. I primer and one coat of black on the firewall, same with the fuel tank cradle. Final coat on the rad guard and screen. Cleaned up the air cleaner, I wasn't going to paint it but I'm glad I decided to, It had water in it, snow must have blown into the intake when it was outside. there was no water in the hose but now that I think about it I'll go have another look . I pulled air hose off but I didn't look any further.

Service Dept Vic
04-17-2009, 10:04 PM
That B7200 is going to be a Trailer Queen when you get done!!!! Nice work on that rad support. Those things are a pain to sand!

Thats what Mr. K. told me.

I was busy having lunch!

dusty-t
04-18-2009, 06:45 PM
Everything looks good from afar but far from good. It will look a lot better than it did, but I have no delusions about my skills at body and paint. Anyway the wheels are on, rad guard & screen, air cleaner, fuel tank support and thats it. Steering wheel and dash are off. I'll be starting on body parts now. Thats why the wheels are on so I can roll it outside to spray. My shop is really small. Mind you I changed my 86 f350 crew from 2wd to 4wd in this little shop. So Iam very gratefull for this little shop.

Very impressive progress! This thread has become your "rebuild journal". That Kubota hasn't received this much love since it left the factory! :D

I enjoy the updates on the progress, nicely done! I tell Vic to stop in from the shop and to make sure to take a look at your latest and chime in.

04-20-2009, 05:30 PM
Hey Guys. Just got a couple of hours today. Cleaned up the screen and hardware for the front grill. The screen was just covered in cement and bent up pretty good. It straightened out not bad. My plan of attack for the plastic part of the grill is to start with jb weld and then fibreglass it. Any thoughts or different ways to do this I'm open to all and any options.

Service Dept Vic
04-21-2009, 07:05 AM
Nice "patch" holding those pieces of plastic together. Is that a Kubota grille badge there??

You are one motivated marine, dusty-t!

dusty-t
04-21-2009, 06:51 PM
Hey Guys. Nope that's not a Kubota grill badge that is a busted Kubota grill badge. JB weld didn't work. I don't think I mixed it right , it didn't harden the way it should have. So while I was waiting for the jbweld to not dry, I cleaned most of the other body parts so they are ready to sand. I did a bit more on the grill after it fell apart. Michael was saying something about being Old School. Me too, it may be a plastic grill but its gonna be held in shape by steel. We'll see what it looks like when its done. Back at it tomorrow and were gonna see if I can make 32 inch j d tiller into a power sweeper! Wish me luck. Forgot also got the fuel tank and firewall on, and ya I know its black.

Service Dept Vic
04-21-2009, 08:55 PM
Black is nice.

Michael
04-21-2009, 11:03 PM
dusty, I am old school, back in the day (the early 1970's) when I was trained you used steel but since I am now a aircraft mechanic, I use aluminum a lot I am thinking that if you got some aluminum you might try your hand at it. since the grille is not going to support anything more then it self. You could make a brace that goes along the inside of it and then simply drill it and use countersunk pop rivets on it, I am thinking 3/16ths rivets would be fine.

Then once you done that a skim coat of fiberglass over the top of it and you are set or bondo would also work, but with the shaking that a tractor has happen to it fiberglass would probably be preferred.

dusty-t
04-22-2009, 06:33 AM
Hey Guys. Thanks for the replies. I messed up painting the firewall, primer and paint didn't like each other. So instead of going out for more paint I just splashed it black. That's after the hour it took me to strip it. Michael, steel I've got Aluminum I don't. I'm more comfortable with steel anyway. But rivets, great idea. Never thought of it. I think I even have some that will work. You can see iv'e put a brace on the bottom I'll replace those small bolts with rivets and I'll make another one to go all the way around the inside of the top and do the same thing. Thanks Guys, now I had better get to work.

dusty-t
04-22-2009, 02:45 PM
Well it won't be the prettiest tractor on the road but it won't ever fall apart. The rivets worked great.Wish I had thought of it. Thanks Michael

dusty-t
04-22-2009, 06:35 PM
Grill is done but for mud and paint.Starting on the hood.Wish me luck. Hey Vic or Mr K. seems I'm gonna need new decals for my 7200. Can you fix me up?

dusty-t
04-23-2009, 06:28 PM
Well I did a bit today. So far the repair on the hood is going well. I cut off about 2 inches at the very front of the hood and I cut out the top of the hood. The piece of sheet metal behind the hood is what I'm using to build the top. 12mm should do the trick.

Michael
04-23-2009, 07:55 PM
For the small dings on the edge of the hood try dry ice. I have used that with some success in the past just wrap it in rags and hold it on the surface for few minutes.

Service Dept Vic
04-23-2009, 08:11 PM
Hey, Dry ice, that's a cool idea! Dusty-t is going to earn his fabrication stripes on this job. have you seen some of the work Wildfire from Newfoundland did on his Kubota?

You guys are talented.

dusty-t
04-23-2009, 10:16 PM
Dry Ice Huh. I was just gonna beat the snot out of it till it did what I wanted it to do. Well, your last idea worked out well. And talented that guy Wildfire is so far out of my league.Who da thunk it, dry ice, where the hell do I get dry ice. Thanks for the replies guys. And for the complments and encouragment and advice and for putting up with this thing taking so long. Must be some kind of record for changing a clutch.

Michael
04-23-2009, 10:49 PM
For dry ice go to Yahoo and type dry ice suppliers in Canada.

I have used dry ice the reason it works is it contracts the metal with out banging it, it is pardon the pun, a cool way to remove the dent. As long as the dent is under a inch you generally can use it.

Got a parking lot ding on your car it works great to remove the ding.

Got a parking lot ding On your car it works great on removing it and it only cost what the dry ice to get rid of the dent.

Hey Guys. Got some more done on the hood. Started putting new steel on. I'll warn you now the welding is ugly. But it will hold. Not used to a mig. Anyway heres whats done so far.

dusty-t
04-24-2009, 05:59 PM

I would take that hood if you had it. For that matter I would probably drive out and pick it up.Oh well , on to stuff that is real and boy is this hood real. I just hope I can keep the back of the tractor on the ground when I tip up the hood. Got a bit more done today. Not a whole lot , my son was changing the rad in the GMC. New rad had a crack in the tank. One of those days .It's a pretty sad truck. Mind you , I don't think I would bring the 454 GMC , 4 by 4 no less!!. Id have to sell the house to pay for gas.

Power steering works good, hydro works good.one little leak at the hydro filter. I'll put the rest of it back together after I change oil and hydro. Thanks Guys. unfortunately the one that is next is the cub cadet 2082 it just needs some TLC, last service was in 06.I have to make new steps because the the cab seems to have been on it since new. The steps are just rotten. Other than that it's just a matter of straightening a few thing and a bit of paint. THEN I get to move on to the B8200. I'm looking forward to that, clutch is seized, grill is gone, hood is smashed. It should be fun. I'm selling the B7200, I will cry but somethings have to go if I want to keep eating. The b8200 has the three speed hydro and boy do I like that, and I went to all the work of putting the b7200 loader on the b8200. I hope I win the lottery so I can keep them both, the 7200 just purrs and its so quiet and the hydro is so smooth. Boy this is hard. Thanks again Guys.

Selling the 7200? Say it isn't so! After all that work... Well, you'll surely get more $ for your equipment this way. Just like selling a car or a house - taking the time to clean it up a bit means you'll get all your $ back it took to restore it and then some.

AND, you'll be well practiced when it comes to bringing the 8200 up to speed.

Hey Guys. This will be the last we will see of the b7200. It sure didn't take long to sell, even with the lousy paint job.

One of the biggest problems I have is finding enough time to do all the crap that I do, get it posted and get back to work. I don't take the time to look around much and that's not really fair but this morning I woke up early (no I didn't pee in the bed) :D so I got on here and started reading Dusty's restoration thread and man it was like brain candy for me. I looked at it right from the start to the end and loved every word of it. My friend take it from me YOU DO GOOD WORK!

I have to apologize for not commenting on it earlier than this. It's been a busy year in my shop and then I took on two mini bike restorations so it didn't leave me with much internet time. Sad to know you sold the tractor but after seeing what you did with it I bet you could get some steel wool and knit one now :)

Those of us that take on this kind of stuff will know first hand the amount of work that has to go into something to have it turn out like your project did. In every step there is a complication that has to be worked out but it sure looks like you won them all. I tip my lid to you sir. Just outstanding. Great thread..

Ah Vic your close. The first bike or even the first thing I ever owned with a motor was a 1969 Honda Z50A K1. I just completed the restoration of that last month. The first photo shows the condition of it when I got it. Arrived in three boxes.

The other bike I completed just before the Z50 was a 1972 Honda CT70. It was just like the second bike I ever owned. I did all the painting, mechanical and aluminum polishing of the bikes and they were painted with base/clear paint with pearl added. I never had the heart to paint them orange though Sorry dusty for high jacking your thread. Vic you got me feeling guilty about posting this stuff on your tractor site. You can delete them after you see them if you like. ;)

Are you kidding me!!! We're into the same things except I can't weld or fabricate like you and Dusty-t!! How did you think I knew the bikes were a CT70 and a Z50 anyway? They are the only bikes from my childhood worh spending a bunch or money and time on!!

Nice headlamp eyebrow on the Z, the lexan mini windshield on the CT is a nice touch and the luggage carrier was a real rear piece. Keep the project pics comming. I even enjoyed the mobile welder in a trailer!!

Your very observant sir to notice the cap, rear rack and small windshield  Here's a few more pics for you seeing you enjoy them. As I said on another post I'm really an auto tech but this welding and fabricating stuff just keeps hunting me down and you'll see a few examples of that in these next pictures. You shouldn't encourage me to post pictures though because I have a building full of completed projects and I have photo's of each project.

I'll leave these here for a few days and take them out. I hate taking over Dusty's thread :(

Wildfire, if it is no problem for Vic or Mr.K then it is not a problem for me. I really like seeing your projects where ever they are. And if you don't post them here I may not be able to see as many. Kinda selfish of me but thats just the way it is.:D Dusty

Thanks Dusty. Glad you like looking at them. I'll leave them there for another day and then pull them off. I'm not comfortable leaving the photo's on a thread such as yours. You did a very nice job on that tractor and you don't need a pelt from Newfoundland taking away from it :D Maybe the boys can start a hobby section somewhere and we all can post something.
