Good article.

I would add a couple things to this:

1. You might prefer to clip all but one extra link from your chains to keep them from flopping around;

2. You might also try the trick of defating your tire prior to installation and snugging and then reinflating afterwards.

3. Try a set of adjusters, either rubber or spring, to keep equal tension across the face of the rim.

There is some debate about how snug tire chains should really be, as looser chains (within reason) tend to self-clean better during use. Chains which are snug to the face of the tire do not.

This is a nice easy to follow instruction guide on how to install tire chains. I actually use tire chains not only in the winter, but also in the summer. The field which I use my heavy equipment on, often has very soft soil and sometimes is muddy. My tires would tend do slip and lose grip. By using chains I do not rip up or damage the soil in any serious way.

Good tire chains make all the difference in the world in winter conditions. The only trade-off that I have when using chains is speed. I keep the speed of the machine low enough so the chains aren't slapping around too hard. I find slower speeds increase the life of the chains considerably. I wouldn't be without chains for any of my vehicles out here in BC.
